First I was in Nepal for about 6 weeks, roughly 3 of these weeks I was sick unfortunately from a cough to travelers diaherrea... Non the less it was fun despite not getting to complete all the trekking trails that I set out to do.

Now I've been in Thailand since the 12th of April, actually regretting not getting a 60 day visa!!! Been in Koh Tao for about two weeks, originally planned to dive but after snorkeling I figured it would be better to spend my money elsewhere... Specifically toward my climbing fees when I arrive in Krabi.

Anyways, I wonder - where to go after Thailand???

I looked into Malaysia since that seemed like an obvious go-to after here but it looks a little dull in comparison to Thailand, and simply the fact that a guide is a total must to climb the highest mountain (which appears to be a simple day hike split into two days) makes me almost want to not go there aside for my visa run to continue my Thailand trip and nothing more!

So now I'm thinking Indonesia... Maybe get some surfing in (I'm a novice but wouldn't mind trying there if its any good?)

Possibly thinking Australia but not sure what I'd do there since I know little about it.

I'd also like to check out Angkor Wat in Cambodia but feel since I am headed south that it will simply be out of my way??

Also considering Japan...

Any suggestions? Pretty much trying to stay on a good path which leads me back home to the USA in the fall... Let me know if this isn't the proper section to post this also..

Well it is hard to provide any info as you have not specified your budget (which may rule out Japan and Australia anyway) or what you want to see. All we know is you like climbing and might want to try surfing.

"makes me almost want to not go there aside for my visa run to continue my Thailand trip and nothing more! "

Maybe you answered your own question. If you are still enjoying Thailand why leave?

You could ofcourse go to Cambodia and spend a couple of days at Angkor Wat for your visa run, then head back to Thailand. It's easy enough to overland it there within a day from Bangkok.

Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are all great destinations. You could do a loop through those three countries, then end up back in Thailand with a new visa.

If you don't want to spend a long time in SE Asia, the suggestion above of doing a visa run to Angkor Wat is a good idea. There's more to Cambodia than Angkor Wat though.

Indonesia would also be good if you're into mountain climbing and want to try surfing. Australia is VERY expensive now, so unless you have a burning desire to go there (which it seems you don't), I'd skip it for now.

I've thought heavily about staying in Thailand for months - but it would require many visa runs u less its easy to get about a month visa extension here around Koh Tao??? Was gonna ask some travel shops that today actually.

My budget, well it could be up to 6,000USD but I do have to buy materials and tools for my work for when I srrive at home along its my plane ticket home so to be safe I will round it down to about 4,000USD which I realize will likely not last me until the fall - maybe until the begining of adept ember if I'm lucky.... Although I like to enjoy my vacation I've realized rather than ration every little dollar like some backpackers I've met.

So ill rule out Japan and Australia for the sake of being realistic.

I did look into Indonesian mountains and was surprised how tall some are!!! Then heavily disappointed to see how much it'd cost to climb the tallest one ($10000+) but still - the idea of climbing some tall mountains around the equator still sounds great, even if it isn't the tallest it'd be nice to climb one around 15,000FT in a day.

As for the Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam idea, it sounds cool... But maybe isn't the best use of my time here I think. People often talk about enjoying culture, but to me to be honest - culture isn't a huge incentive in my travels (call me crazy). Wild life, activities unique to landscapes, and landscapes are my biggest incentives to go places. This is why when I think Cambodia, I think of Angkor Wat and nothing else... With Laos I think rock climbing but figure it's better in Thailand. With Vietnam I think war history, which isn't the biggest interest.

At the moment I'm strongly lea inf toward Indonesia due to the mix of mountains and islands though... But I would be curious to hear other ideas! Maybe the Phillipines? Also, where else could be good to stop by on my Way traveling home?

I would like to mention that I did get an I cite to Barcelona Spain due to knowing someone there through my work... Maybe this is another possibility? Not sure if its realistic though due to potential Airfare costs.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe you need to do more research into destinations that may be possible. Laos, for example has some amazing landscapes and there are opportunities for trekking there. Plus, it's cheap. Vietnam also has some beautiful landscapes - it's not all about war history.

Have you thought about China? Again, amazing landscapes and some very mountainous areas.

Have a look at some guidebooks - there should be plenty floating around in Thailand.

Having said that, if you plump for Indonesia I think you'll have a good time.

Based on your interests and budget,I'd go with Indonesia.Or Laos...there is very good trekking there.

Any visa extension is going to only give an additional 7 days in Thailand and cost 1900THB.

I've just realized you've found mostly negatives for almost all the other countries surrounding Thailand.

Your right joolz I probably should look into the countries a bit more before I dismiss them. I can't deny though that a small part of me would like to go somewhere elsewhere than an Asian place, simply to diversify my travels a bit more.

I have thought about China since I've had a friend who raves about it - although the communism of the country kinda sways me away a bit.

Bummer that a visa extension only lasts 7 days :( I really wish I got the 60 day visa but when I entered Nepal I got the 90 day visa and only wanted to stay 6 weeks, one of those weeks I was in Kathmandu waiting for a flight to Bangkok since I was sick and wasn't able to trek up until my flight and had to cut my trek short.

A reason I look at a lot of negatives also is because I didn't do that with Thailand or Nepal. Thailand I do love, but not the night scene so much. It honestly annoys me a bit how much drinking is going on while marijuana is a serious crime... I see drinking as something that's far more dangerous, annoying, and destructive... And Nepal had kinda mediocre food but was great otherwise... So I try to think ahead as much as possible.

Something that makes me wonder about trekking In Laos is the jungle regions that I'd be trekking through. I can only bare the heat so much, which is why Indonesia sounds great since the ocean would be there along side the trekking. I also like to go alone (I loved Nepal for this reason).

Ill probably head to Indonesia, and spend as much time as possible In Thailand in the end though because I'm so picky... I'd love to visit Europe possibly too, maybe it'd be worth it to cut my travels way shorter snd go back to America by stopping somewhere in Europe..

Communism of China? Believe me go there and you will see capitalism is as alive as in any Western Country!
