I hope I'm doing this right. I need help with a RTW trip and thought you folks might be able to point me in better directions. I was planning on leaving End of February. Is this enough time to research/plan?

Here are questions I'm thinking about:

1) route - given weather and such, I would like to start in NZ and Aus, before heading up to Asia, going through China, Japan, Thailand, India then over to Egypt/Morrocco before hitting Spain and then training through eastern europe. Is this feasible? Am I messing up the "one-way rule" if I train?

2) traveling by myself - i have different friends that were planning on going, but no one is feeling dependable enough. what should i be wary of if I end up traveling on own?

3) is there a package or deal of some sort through some agent that would take me RTW for a long period of time (maybe nine months), without spending an exorbitant amount of money (I don't need to stay in nice hotels - hostels and smaller places are great).

There is just so much info out there and I feel like i'm reading for hours a day without really getting anywhere. Any suggestions on places to look to help me out with this?

Thanks everyone.

  1. Yes this is feasible and not a bad idea. The "one-way" rule will depend what ticket you get - some tickets include overland stages anyway. When you've decided on a rough itinerary, sit down with a good travel agent and work out the best ticket for you.

  2. You will meet loads of other travellers doing a similar route - probably more than if you were travelling with friends. Yuo won't need to worry about being alone. But if you can persuade some of your friends to come out and join you, even for short stretches of the trip, you might find this breaks up the "alone-ness".

  3. I'm sure there is, but it would probably work out more expensive than finding places as you go, and would take away some of your flexibility. You're unlikely to have a problem finding accommodation in any of the places you plan to go.

Relax and enjoy!
