I am in the very early stages of planning My Big Trip. I intend on spending 90 days traveling beginning in the fall sometime. I haven't yet looked into weather or activities but I would like to visit the following cities in (roughly) this order.
Wellington>

Sydney>

Bali>

Singapore>

Bangkok>

Kathmandu>

Agra>

London>

Paris>

Amsterdam>

Prague>

Zurich>

Venice>

Florence>

Naples>

Athens>

Barcelona>

I'd like to end my trip in South America, visiting Machu Picchu in particular. If anyone has any travel tips, input, must see / must do stuff, warnings (weather / crime / etc.) it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance.

What do you want to do in each of these places? I don't really understand why you would fly from Singapore to Thailand just to see Bangkok. Why you would travel to India just to see Agra? Or Nepal just to see Kathmandu?

You need to provide information about your budget, where you are starting from and interests too, because people can not help you without that information.

Too much for 90 days - at least 20 of those days will be spent travelling, which leaves you about 3 days per country+. By the time you get your bearings and find out what there is to do it will be time to move on. Pick no more than 2 continents and concentrate on them, say Asia and Australasia, or Europe and South America. That way it will be more enjoyable and you will have the time to actually +see something.

Questions like this from newbies pop up daily.

Okay, first of all flying to so many different countries to see just one specific place is unrealistic and frankly pointless as you will miss out on so much, you will spend all your time in transit and you will be dead on your feet the whole time!!!!

Three months is not much time at all for what you want to see so what I strongly suggest you do is pick two or three countries based on what you want to see the most, preferably close together, then travel for a month in each country.

For example you have Bangkok and Singapore on your list. So why not fly into Bangkok, spend 4 -5 weeks traveling through Thailand, head to Malaysia and spend 4 -5 weeks there then end you trip in Singapore?

That is three months. And you still won't see everything in those countries, but you will get a good taste of them.

Give us an idea of your budget and specific tastes and we can help you more.

As above....you need to give input on your interests, your budget.

This kind of trip will leave you exhausted and confused ;-)

And forget about adding another continent(for MP)...you need to narrow it down to a much smaller geographical area, not make it wider!

So perhaps this amount of travel would be more reasonable in a 6 month time span? I don't necessarily want to fly to all these cities - would prefer to train / bus to the ones that are close together. Budget isn't of concern. I'll be starting from San Francisco. I enjoy hiking, kayaking, bicycling (I'd like to spend some time traveling by bicycle on the south island of NZ), swimming, photography, and generally being outdoors. I am in the spa / anti - aging industry and would like to learn more, first hand, about the eastern holistic methods and traditions.

OK, so given you're upping to 6 months and given you're interests I'd suggest the following
Fly from SF to NZ, spend perhaps 3 months exploring the country doing some hikes, cyclo-touring... then fly to Singapore and spend 3 months travelling up through Malaysia to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and back to Thailand then fly to SF.

If budget is of no concern I would second the route suggested by ToadofToadHall, but just book your flight from SF to NZ and your flight from Bangkok to SF. The rest you can just book as you go along which gives you some more flexibility. That way you can arrive in NZ and if you like it stay longer than anticipated or vice versa (personally 3 months seems a little long to me, but it is not my ideal destination). If you chose to spend less time in NZ, or any other countries along that route, and find yourself arriving in Bangkok weeks or even months before your flight home you can fly to Kathmandu, Bali, Delhi (for a quick taste of India and the Taj Mahal) or Borneo (which given your interests I think you may enjoy).

A general rule of thumb I used on earlier long trips is plan for ~2 months in any given region at minimum- the beauty of long-term travel is you can spend time getting to know a place and not plan everything out in great detail. So something like 2 months SE Asia, 2 months NZ/ maybe one or two East Coast Oz places (I lived in NZ six months but agree with the above poster that 3 months might be a lot there if you're just traveling around- it's gorgeous but the size of Colorado in US terms), and 2 months Western Europe would be the minimum pace without losing your sanity IMO. Though Europe tends to be more a focus on cities and culture in my experience so maybe substitute South America instead.

I promise you can always take trips later in life to revisit places you've missed, even if it's hard to believe now. ;-)
