I leave today on my rtw and im absolutely miserable. Im thinking why on earth did i get myself into this. And on top of the general feeling of anxiety i have tonsilitis!!! So im flying off even though im still having fevers and can barely swallow. My ticket is non-refundable and even of i cancelled i wouldn't be able to get another flight for weeks :(

Im pretty much a mess, just walking around to house crying, and i have to pack everything up and leave!

Anyway i know noone can help me, just wanted to share my feeling. Lets see if im back in a few weeks

Hi Cat,

I think nerves are normal. I'm leaving on my trip in 2 weeks (going from UK to Australia by land (except for a flight from Indonesia) then working there for a year), and it's only now that I've realised what a huge decision it is! I know that I won't regret it though, and I'm sure it will be the same for you. You'll forget all about your throat once you arrive in some exotic location and have to work out how to get to your first hostel.

Anyway, I hope you haven't cancelled and you're reading this from an internet café where you can barely work out what the characters on the keyboard mean. It's miles better once you're on the road. Best of luck on your trip.

Agree w/ above poster, nerves are normal. Especially since you are sick, those feelings will be intensified. I would suggest that maybe you really spoil yourself upon arriving at your first destination, stretch your budget and stay in a nicer place for the first night or two to help nurse yourself back to health. Don't follow a regular sight-seeing itinerary, just get yourself settled into your first destination, rest, relax. As you kick the tonsilitis, your nerves will settle and I am sure you will begin to feel excited about the start of your trip. Feel better and safe travels!!!

Hey.. it seems that this is a perfectly normal way to feel! I leave on my rtw trip in 5 weeks... I hadnt really though about it as had soooo much on at work but now my last big project is over the reality of whats ahead has just hit me... I spent the majority of last week crying on my sister as am now super scared of going away and leaving my whole family for a year! But i think this is natural but once im away and swept up in a new culture and meeting new people i feel confident that Ill start to enjoy myself and feel comfortable in the travelling lifestyle. Anyway Cat...hope you're ok.. be strong as this experience really will change you. Xx

Good advice above -- Trapperchica's advice about pampering yourself might be especially wise. If you're gone traveling for a year, you're bound to have a few miserable days here and there. You might get a few of yours out of the way early -- splurge a bit on a decent room for the night so you can get well. I remember being incredibly sick in Krakow for a couple of days, in a cruddy hostel with construction going on next door. In retrospect, I should have taken the visa and splurged on a decent room for a couple of days. I'm sure you'll feel better soon, and will wonder why you would ever contemplating NOT going on such a trip. Good luck!

Please give youself some time before you come back.. Give yourself time to be on the road and to get into a good traveling flow. You are used to being at home and working everyday and having the same routine. Now you are going into the unknown. Of course it is scary. Everyone that goes on a RTW has the same thoughts. If they say that they didn't , their lying. You will look back on your nerves and laugh when you trip is over. We were the same way on our RTW trip in 2006. When you get home from your trip, you will wish that you were back on the road. Have a great trip and enjoy. it will be the best time of your life.

Agree with Jeremy. I have been back for a month from my RTW trip...I had nerves too, but I would do it all again in a minute. It was the best thing I've ever done. Make sure you chill out somewhere beautiful when you need to, and enjoy...you won't regret it.

Hi everyone

Just thought i would let you know what ended up happening. I did leave- travelled for around 15 hours with a fever and completely out of it. My parents decided to help out and booked me and my friend into a luxury hotel in phuket for 3 nights. That was 2 weeks ago, ive been from Phuket to the Surin Islands, to bangkok and am currently in Sihanoukville in Cambodia. funny enough im on more antibiotics for a chest infection. But ive been having a lot of fun anyway. Im lucky in that my friend was happy to take over the reins for a bit while i got back to normal (I was seriously that out of it i couldn't think straight).

But yep i made it, im enjoying it, and im not ready to head home yet. Good luck to everyone one who has been having the same problems as me- and thanks to everyone for their support.
