Just finished round the world trip

Interest forums / Gap Year & Round the World Travel

Hi all,
I just wanted to write something to this thread because I found it so helpful as we were travelling around the world. My husband and I travelled for 50 weeks and went to every continent except the Antarctic. The main point I want to get across is to all the people reading this who may be a bit anxious, excited, nervous about their upcoming trip. I felt all those things too...but it was by far the best thing we've ever done, as individuals, as a couple and as citizens of the world! Cheesy I know, but I can't express how brilliant it will be for you, you will never forget it and it will be the best time of your life! Indulge in every moment, good and bad...cause it is an amazing opportunity and when you get back you'll be grateful that you had the chance to see the world. We certainly feel that way and I hope you will too. The planning, the saving, the administrative side of it IS WORTH IT! Enjoy!

Thank you for your post, my boyfriend and I are off on Friday and we are swinging between excitment and fear! Have we remembered everything (probably not) are we taking too much (definitely). So thank you for a few words of encouragement, much appreciated!

I'm starting to plan a trip leaving next year. Started as a 3 month trip to SE Asia but now looking like something much more similar to what you have just done. Is there any advice you can shed on how much to budget or any other tips / traps you can help me out with? I have AUS$20,000 (about the same as US dollars) saved so far. I plan to go everywhere but Africa and maybe South America at this stage, and plan on staying mostly in hostels.

Hi Dane,
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you!
Depends on where you go...Sth America pretty cheap and South East Asia even cheaper. Africa pretty expensive and obviously Europe really expensive!
We left with AUS $30,000 each and that was way more than enough. We stayed in hostels, but mostly in a private room, so that is an extra cost that as a single, you won't have. Also, we drank a beer and a glass of wine most nights which adds up!
We stayed with local families as much as possible and had A LOT of family and friends to stay with, so I think in 12 months we actually paid for accommodation for about 7 months.
Hope this helps!
