Hi
my boyfriend and i are going to Asia at the end of September... we will travel around Thailand, Cambodia and then stay in Vietnam for a while while he does his kitesurfing instructor course... we don't know where we'll go after that or how long will we travel around for... therefore I am not sure what should we do with travel insurance.. should we just buy a 1 year insurance? or can we buy a 6 month one and then extend it? what if we end up staying longer than a year?
Also, we are buying a one way ticket from London to Bagkok.. then we will just travel by land and once we eant to leave Asia we will buy a new ticket.. is it going to be a problem to get to Thailand without an outward ticket from Thailand?
this is all a last minute decision so i think i will probably come back with more questions soon..

It shouldn't be a problem getting into Thailand, but apparently they have starting getting a lot stricter. Do a serach on the Thailand branch for more info.
Re insurance: I got a 12 month policy, with the option to extend it by 6 months. But make sure you have the option to extend it, as most insurers won't let you take out a new policy when you're abroad. from my experience, a 12 month policy isn't a whole lot more expensive than a 6 month one, but it depends what country you're in, what insurers you're delaing with etc. Also, the cheapest insurance isn't always the best.
Good luck!

hi there,
i am looking at insurance at the min for my travels and im gonna buy it with worldnomads i think as they allow u to extend ur policy online when ur out there if u need longer than originally planned and u can add extra valuables to ur policy really easy if u need to

Re. one way flights to Thailand, to visit under the Visa exemption rules you need proof of onward travel from Thailand within 30 days of arrival. If you want to stay longer the you either need to buy a visa or do a visa run out of the country before your 30 days ends. I think this is correct, I was reading some of the threads on hear about it yesterday, just do a search for thai visas or some thing similar and there were quite a lot of threads. I would read them your self and not take what I have written to be gospel, it was late when I was reading last night!!

HelenaK if you get a Thai Tourist visa before leaving, the airlines will let you board on a one-way ticket. Otherwise it's become rather hit-and-miss. I've been required to show proof of onward travel flying 1-way to Thailand a few times, but having a tourist visa in your passport this would not be an issue.

It is technically a requirement for visa-exempt entry, but was never an issue - until recently. Apparently now they are cracking down a tad on the requirement. A simple way to cover yourself is to buy a dirt-cheap flight out of Thailand (which you may or may not use) with a budget airline such as AirAsia. e.g. Bangkok to Penang (Malaysia) enough in advance costs about $8 plus taxes - cheap insurance...
