Hi!

I'm planning on backpacking before settling down and taking an Au Pair job in either Italy or Colombia.

How long would $5,000 last in Europe, if I wanted to travel to France, Spain, Italy, and Greece? I tend to like hostelling over couchsurfing, but apart from that I tend to travel fairly cheaply.

And how long would $5,000 last in Central America, if I wanted to travel through Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia? If I take this option, I'd probably do WWOOF or a workaway job, maybe working in a hostel or farm in Costa Rica for a month for accomodation and food. If that's the case, someone told me $5,000 could stretch to about 6 months of travel...does that seem realistic?

I suppose if you were WWOOFing or doing Workxchange or something like that you could spread your $5000 a little further and if you're frugal you may be able to stretch to 6 months.

Whatever you do, it will last a hell of a lot longer in C. America than Europe.

I have the same dilemma- Central America or Europe. But Europe is more exotic to me so I'm doing more Europe. I traveled around some parts of western Europe & I averaged about $90/day- hostels, no parties, cooking in hostels. So $5k/$90 will give you a rough estimate of how long you'll last.

Not sure about Central America budget. I have a friend who works at a place called Rancho Margot in Costa Rica & I heard it was a good place for volunteering. Good luck!

not long at all frankly. europe, especially western europe is very expensive. toad is right there are ways to stretch the budget such as wwoofing or staying in eastern europe, but i think the 6 months is very optimistic. you certainly wouldnt be able to do much, no expensive activities, limited to free sights, no nights out or splurges etc.

South America is your best bet. 5 grand should cover a budget 6 months there (depending on the country and what you do of course).

oops my mistake, i read that as 5 grand gbp, not dollars which makes it a lot worse! you are probably best leaving europe for another trip entirely on at least double the budget.

Depends on many things...what you do,what you eat,how often you move etc etc..but overall your per-day budget in Western Europe will be 2-3 times more than in Central America.

Euroland is always expensive... Central America can be very cheap... $5000... perhaps 3X as far ...
