Hi - hoping you can help.

Have a UK nationwide flex account which will allow me access to my money whilst travelling around Australia. But I understand in order to work in Oz, you need an Oz Bank Account. What do you need in order to open this? Is it best to do this from the UK or whilst I am in Australia?

Thanks for your help!

Do it in Australia. You have a 6 week (?) grace period after you arrive in which you can open an account with your passport and some sort of proof of address. After that period of time it becomes a lot more complicated. Pretty sure you'll find more details in the FAQ in the Australia branch.

Most major Australian banks will allow you to open an a/c overseas - transfer money in and then you have to pick up the cards and show your ID when you arrive - you need to know what city you are arriving in but not where you working or anything like that - we did it with commonwealth www.cba.com.au - $4/month for all electronic transactions is OK

And check out www.victeach.com.au or other similar credit unions - much, much better than other banks! lower fees and their visa debit works world wide and is probably the best thing that banking has ever offered.
