Hi Guys,

I am planning to go travelling with 2 friends, while I am on my gap year, and we are starting to think about 1-2 months travelling from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur. We will be going between February and April sometime. We would love to go via HCMC, Phnom Penh and Bangkok. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice in terms of what we shouldn't miss, best ways to travel and any other helpful tips for South East Asia. This is my first time in the region so I really have no idea what to expect apart from what I have read online.

Thanks!

Best way to travel in terms of what? Scenery? Cost? Convenience? I enjoy rail travel in VN.
You will need at least a month for VN if you intend to see the main places like Ha Noi, Ha Long, Ninh Ninh province, Hue, Hoi An/ Da Nang, Da Lat, HCMC, Mekong delta and perhaps SaPa.

This is a short agenda, maybe cross post on the relevant SE Asia branches and tell us your interests

Hey

Did the trip Hanoi - Bangkok this summer. IMO the things you should see are:
Vietnam: Ha Long Bay, Hanoi itself, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat, Mekong Delta
Cambodja: Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (ANGKOR!!!)

We took a plane from Hanoi to Da Nang. I think this is worth considering: it's cheap and travel overland is very slow in SE-Asia. All other travels we did by bus.

If you want more information, just let me know.

Good travels!

One month is nowhere near enough for that..even 2 is pushing it.

As for what ''not to miss''...have you read a guidebook? Something like the LP ''SE Asia on a shoestring'' will give you all the highlights along the way.

Without any input from you (eg likes/dislikes,budget,interests etc etc) you will not get a lot of useful suggestions......

Agree with #1 on the 'best' way to travel..best for what?

I could tell you what to expect but it would be on the basis of my method of travelling. SEA is a place you need to experience from your perspective, not complete strangers.

I would agree with #2 on the itinerary up to Thailand and possibly adding Nha Trang. As others said it does depend on what you want to do - that itinerary will have you firmly on the tourist trail so will be plenty of other travellers along the way, but it won't get you the experience of being with local people or too immersed in the traditional culture.

Then when in Thailand the train is a good option as you can get direct to Kuala Lumpa whilst choosing some stops on the way.

Some of us dont need to immerse in the traditional culture to be able to enjoy a holiday. And every stop gives the chance of being with local people, well travelled route or not. Its like saying if you dont get off the tourist trail you're not seeing the "real" country.

Ok guys, thanks for that. I will cross post on to the SEA board as suggested and include a little bit more as to what I am interested in doing and seeing. For my original question about how to travel, I really don't mind. I suppose I was asking about the best way in terms of scenery and speed combined as I would rather spend my days exploring than on transport. Really just wanted to get a feel for what everyone thought and their reasons for thinking it. For what I want to do; I really just want to get immersed in the culture. Im also an undergraduate in zoology so any suggestions in terms of wildlife experiences would be welcome as well. Sorry for original vagueness, I'm new to this!

Just one suggestion. Maybe do some search of your own and see if you can come up with some sort of itinerary. Dont expect others to do all the donkey work for you. In other words, the work of a travel agent. You'll get all the help you need if you show you've put some time yourself into planning a trip.
