We are attempting to do some travel in Beijing, China (before the Olympic crush) before heading down into SEA.

Our rough idea is to travel overland from Hanoi down to Singapore where our RTW airpass picks up again.

I thought we might find a cheap flight out of China into Hanoi to start but we are not having much success. Any suggestions?

Train travel may be an option, but it seems you need to have a round trip flight in hand before applying for a visa. Is this true? Would proof of our onward flight from Singapore be enough?

We are currently in South America and trying to get this organized from here. Any help/tips/suggestions would be appreciated. Asia seems like one big question mark to us--all the reason for going there!

Hi how are you . How cheap is cheap? I would think Cathay Pacific would be the best going into HKG. I am an RTW specialist at a travel company in Canada. Let me how cheap is cheap, i then can check for you.

Hope you have a great trip.

I have read about visa issues in China. You might want to research this to make sure you don't run into any problems. I just got an email from a friend who briefly mentioned issues with this....but I don't have any details. Try the China branch for questions on this and air to Hanoi. I always wanted to do the train between HK and Hanoi, but just have not done it yet...I know several people who have though...not a big deal.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

We've decided to arrange our RTW airpass with a stop in HK instead of Beijing. If we really want to see China, we'll make arrangements for a visa and round trip flight from there after the olympics are long over. The problem is the limited routing within China itself when using OneWorld, and coupled with the visa difficulties not being able to show a departure ticket if going overland. Would have been nice though...
