Hi all, I am a world traveler. I've travelled as a volunteer, for work, and to meet friends. I'm hooked, and I feel the need to hit the road again in about a month, to somewhere I've never been before. But I have a problem: I have no mission this time.

My job allows me to work from anywhere, very cheaply and happily. But what I need is that video game "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" to be real so that I can have an important reason to go to that next place. I feel the need to be challenged, and use my travelling skills for something real, not just a vacation.

One idea I have is to join a freighter ship, perhaps from America to Europe.

Please, give me some more ideas! And ask me anything.

Sometimes travel itself is the mission!

I have also backpacked to many places and worked in many a relief/emergency situation (im a nurse). but i also travel just for fun. the inherent need to scratch that itch. I dont need a reason to want to see and explore a new place, most of the time that IS the reason.

but if you want a challenge or a reason, then how about using your next trip as research/inspiration to write a novel?

Or how about a specific task such as making your way from a to b by bicycle, or on a minimum amount of cash or the least amount of weight in your pack possible?

or make it your mission to study and learn a language or other skill as you go?

When you talk about joining a freighter ship, what exactly do you mean? As a passenger, really expensive these days. If to work, you'd have to be really lucky.

I must go down to the seas again
to the lonely sea and the sky
and all I need is a tall ship
and a star to steer her by ....

John Masefield didn't need a 'mission' either.

I actually liked playing Carmen Sandiego. It was surprising what you learnt at the same time. Pity it hasnt been rereleased to suit newer operating systems.

jimmyjams: do we know eachother?

If you're the same poster using multiple handles, then yes, you'd know each other.

Been reading this forum for a few days in prep for a potential 6-12 month jump. I'm familiar with someone who goes by jimmyjams elsewhere. I have no intentions of foul play here as I plan on using this site as a major source of advice.

Multiple handles are okay but need to have different email addresses. Theres someone over on NZ branch who not only has multiple handles, he uses more than one in the same thread. But no point having multiple handles unless you use differing styles.

Well if you want a Carmen Sandiego thing in real life, you can visit all the places in the theme song and string photos together for one good montage in the end. ;-) (Plus I mean you'd go to places that range from Antarctica to Mali to Amsterdam to Ohio!)

That aside, I did meet a few people who were on various dedicated theme journeys- often they involve epic journeys of the sort where you try to go around the world without flying, or start in Lisbon and make it to Bali without flying... lots of crazy "without flying" journeys now that I think about it, as I guess it's a good handicap.
