My partner and I had planned a RTW trip with NZ and SE Asia involved, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we may have to cancel.

Does anyone know if this is something that can be done?
We booked through Travel Nation, and we don't have any travel insurance atm, but if we could get some that meant getting refunded on the flights, we would.

What do you think??

You can't get insurance to cover you for something that has already arisen. Go back to the company you booked through and ask then to look at your request, as a favour rather than as a right (Compassionate grounds, maybe?)
You will maybe have more chance of success if you ask a newspaper to take up your case for you - but you'd better have a good story if you take this route.

Even if you have bought non refundable tickets with a budget airline you are still entitled to a refund of taxes,

The refund will depend on the specifics terms and condition for the tickets you bought - it may fully refundable, partially refundable or non-refundable. As westwood says, whatever the case may be, you can at least claim the taxes (which can be the bulk of the money).

agree with number 2. taxes and airport fees are refundable at least. best would be to check with your agent?

Check the terms and conditions of your booking. If it's not refundable, get travel insurance NOW, before whatever it is that may cause you to cancel happens. Then hope that the insurance company doesn't twig that you already knew before you got insurance that this might happen. And that they don't look at this forum and recognise your photo ...

And next time, get insurance as soon as you book.

jools - have you ever complained about the cost of travel insurance?
If so, next time just re-read what you've written above. When you steal from one, you steal from all.

Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.

I've been trying to think of the best thing to do - cancel, not cancel etc. It's a complicated situation.

Out of interest, does anyone know about if it's possible to change the name on flights like that???

Again, it depends on the Terms and conditions of your ticket. It can vary. Though normally it's not possible to change the name.

I'm a bit confused by the OP - has the event that may cause you to cancel already happened and it's a case of deciding whether you cancel or not, or has the event not happened but you think it might?

If the first, it would be dodgy to get insurance now, if the second, I think it would be OK.
