Hi guys.

So the plan is to fly to Kathmandu from London, spend approx. five weeks in Nepal including the three week trek around the Annacura Trail (I can't spell), Lumbini and Chitwan. Then planning on flying down to Indonesia, working back upwards, probably about two three weeks in Indonesia, Malaysia, four weeks in Thailand (will be learning to dive in Ko Tao hopefully), two weeks in Laos and four weeks in Cambodia (including three day pass into Angkor). Planning on mainly travelling around SouthEast Asia by the bus/coaches. Then finishing off in Australia around Queensland for three to four weeks (hopefully diving at the GBR).

Planning on flying cheap as poss, sleeping in hostels etc. Partner and I are travelling together but calculating per person. Dunno if sharing a bed in a hostel is possible/practical or even worth it. Any advice on saving money would be great, quite happy to house sit in Australia, dunno about working in the hostels or if that will mean missing out?

Thanks guys :)

Er, Indonesia has 922 permanently inhabited islands. Which ones are you hoping to visit? It will take you 2-3 weeks just to see one of them.

Why two weeks in Laos and four weeks in Cambodia?

I wouldn't bother with sharing a bed in a hostel. It's probably illegal, completely disgusting for other travellers to have to put up with, and if you paid for two separate beds you'd find it cheaper/the same price to get your own room!

Re. costs for trekking in Nepal. Send a PM to 'Meatismurder'. He's been on one recently and is just about to embark on another.

I was planning on just Java and Sumatra. I have a longer list of things I want to see in Cambodia plus its a lot bigger. I can make adjustments to my timetable, most likely taking time spent in Australia off if Ii find additional things I want to do.
It's only illegal in Malaysia out of all the places I mentioned, as far as I can tell. I assume you have got confused with sharing a bed and having sex. Obviously having sex in a dorm full of other people isn't ok.

At the moment I am just considering likely cost of the trip, as different sources are telling me different amounts

You wont see much of both Java and Sumatra in just 3 weeks. I'd stick to one or the other if I were you.

And perhaps the word I was looking for wasn't 'illegal', just 'forbidden'. I doubt you'd find too many hostel owners that would let you share a bunk bed in a dorm for the price of one person. How long are you planning to abstain from sex for? And if you think about other people for a moment, you may realise that it would just be incredibly uncomfortable for people that don't know you. I'm sure you are nice people and all, but if I discovered that happening in my dorm room I'd be demanding a refund.

How much research have you done into the cost of travel in South East Asia. Its about as cheap as it gets.

Seriously, if you can't afford a bed, you probably can't afford to travel.

Guest houses in SEA charge by the room and not per person.
