whatever you do, break your new shoes (especially the boots!!) in before you go. It is NOT fun wearing brand new shoes on a hike. Trust me, I've done it, it isn't pretty.

I like having a pair of sturdy lightweight sandals because wearing the same shoe all the time can make it stink. When not wearing sandals or slippers, I walk around in a pair of sneakers. I dont like boots because they tend to be heavy and I find myself more tired after a long hike. My experience with Goretex shoes leads me to believe that they don't breathe as well and are more prone to stink in hot weather.
When it rains. I make a rain cover for my shoe out of a couple of plastic bags and some duct tape. Kind of dorky looking, but keeps my feet dry.
