Hi,

Mysalf and my gf are travelling for 1 year (all travel-no work) and we are comtemplating as to what size bags to bring.

We travelled around europe for almost 3 weeks and i ahd a 60 litre and gf had 50l bag.
The 50 l bag was too much for my gf so she is thinking of getn a 35l bag which we have seen. They seem very compact and we think will suit her perfect.

Im unsure what to do. I dont mind the 60 litre bag so i think i should go with this is carry extra stuff for us.

What are peoples thoughts on size of rucksacks?

It sounds like you have answered your own question. Get her a smaller bag and carry some of her stuff. OR - just tell her to pack less into her current bag :-)

To save disagreements, carry your own stuff and only your stuff.

I think that 60l is too much unless you're carrying your own camping gear etc. Go with the girlfriend and get a 35/40l pack. You'll be much happier for it.

And it's cheaper - you don't buy as many souveniers :P

I always think smaller is better. Remember, you're going to be lugging that thing around for an entire year. The smaller size will force you to make decisions about keeping your gear to a minimum, which is a good thing. Just remember, if you forget something, determine you need something, etc., etc., you'll almost surely be able to find it while you're on the road.

I recommend the 35L pack. My partner and I both had these for a 1yr rtw trip. We averaged 6kg per pack through the year, but sometimes he would take a few of the heavier things and I would carry more of the bulky, lighter items. We bought and ditched some items along the way due to weather etc, and also sent a small box of souvenirs home a couple of times.
We previously travelled with much larger packs on shorter trips, and I'd never do it again.

Neither of you need more than 35l - though if you are a taller guy you may have trouble finding a small pack to fit you! Seriously 35l did me fine solo for 6 months in South America - as a couple theres lots of stuff you share e.g. guide books, shampoo!
