Hi Everyone
Im in the process of planning my round the world trip which is due to start in September and have just come accross the LP forums which are brilliant so I am looking for everyone's advice on my plans and any tips/recommendations you can give me.

I am 27 and I have up to 1 year off work (I'm taking a career break) starting at the beginning of September. However, as I will be travelling alone I am not sure I will take the full year as I may get fed up of being on my own and come home in less than a year depending on how it's going.

Ive done very little proper planning for the trip so far as I work full time and have not had the time. Plus I don't want to have too many fixed plans as Im looking forward to being able to be flexible with my travels.

I have travelled a fair amount so far but always with friends - this will be the first time I am travelling alone. I've been to India/Vietnam/Thailand/Hong Kong/South Africa/North America/Lots of places in Europe.

So far I have just booked my round the world flights with the following stops:
London - Singapore - Sydney - Auckland - Santiago - Rio - London

I am broadly thinking along the following lines:
September to end October - Malaysia
November to early Jan - Australia
Jan - end February - New Zealand - both North and South Island
March until ??? - South America

I have budgeted circa £25,000 but this will depend on how long I end up travelling for so if I stay for less time then hopefully I won't spend the full amount.

I would really appreciate everyone's views on this rough plan - do you think the plans look OK? Is my budget realistic (Ive heard that Oz is really expensive if coming from the UK so no sure if this will be enough)? I appreciate that this is pretty vague in terms of my plan and questions but as I say, any advice/tips/recommendations will be massively appreciated as now I am starting to think about my plans abit more I am feeling a bit daunted by the whole thing.

Thank you in advance for any advice that anyone can offer. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

Laura

The RTW route is a pretty standard one, maybe apart from the South American part.

Budget depends on many things..how you travel, where you sleep, what you eat,how many paid activities you do...but your budget looks doable.

On the first part..if you have 2 months? then I'd try to see a bit more than just Malaysia and Singapore..either up into Thailand, down to Indonesia or somewhere else in SE Asia. There are loads of cheap flights from KL in particular...you could have a couple of weeks almost anywhere in the region.

Two months is enough to see a decent part of OZ,but not the whole country.I guess you are planning the East Coast? Or a circular trip including Uluru,South Australia etc? This will be the most expensive part of your trip..maybe £2500-3000 a month.

Two months in NZ is good.

For SA,as much time as you can! I'd try to get up to Bolivia through Chile, then maybe down through Argentina and finish in Rio...that needs minimum 3 months, but 5 or 6 would be better ;-)

Laura,

I did a 10 month RTW last year and here is some of my advise:

MOST IMPORTANT: Don't rush, take your time. I think you plan looks real good as your not trying to make it to 20 countries...like I did.

Don't over plan. A lot of posters told me this on here when I was planing my trip and they were right. I rough guide is fine, but things do happen on the road. Maybe you'll find somewhere you love and want to stay longer or find you hate somewhere you thought you'd love.

Your budget seems fine...aside from OZ. I did not go there but I've heard it makes London look like a budget destination now.

I see you have Malaysia planned, would also suggest having a look at Indonesia as well. It was one of my favorites and there is a ton to see and do.

You can easily spend 5 months in South America. Highly suggest Argentina....Bolivia too.

Good luck and have a great time!
