Hey guys,

I posted a few months ago regarding the same topic. I'd love to have your opinion again on an itinerary that goes like this, for 6 months. Expected to be from Sept to Feb. Seems like the weather is ok in most places.

Iran: 3-4 weeks
India and Sri Lanka: 2 months, 2 months-2 weeks
Myanmar: 3 weeks
Laos: 3 weeks
Cambodia: 3 weeks
Vietnam: 3-4 weeks
(I know, it's more than 6 months....)

Obviously it will change regarding what we like and dont like. I traveled in North India for a month a few years ago (Amritsar, Delhi, Shimla, Vanarasi, etc.) so those places will be left out, except Vanarasi (girlfriend tells me she absolutely wants to go there)

So not as much airfare. We both work full time ( so basically not rich at all but at the same time not always looking for the 5$ hotel).

Thank you for your comments!!!

Looks fine to me..depends what you want to do in ech place of course ;-)

If you need to knock a few weeks off,you could take one off Cambodia, one off Laos and stick to 3 in Vietnam.

Of course the best way is...as you say...to decide as you go,not before.

Cool thank you Lucapal

I was pretty sure about the time in Iran and India but not so sure with the SE Asia part.
How about land transportation from Myanmar to Vietnam? I would assume since this part of the world is somewhat touristic it would not be a problem. We'd prefer to do it by land instead of air, obviou$ reason$.

AFAIK you can now cross the border into Thailand overland (when I was last in Myanmar you couldn't..that was 2 years ago).

Then you would have to get across Thailand..either up to Laos or across to Cambodia. That part is all ok by land. And then finish in Vietnam...or else make a circle and finish back in Bangkok.

I'd take time off Cambodia, rather than Laos. I reckon Laos has plenty to offer for three weeks or more.

Things change rapidly as far as Burma goes. What's true this week isn't true next week. In fact, when I was in Burma just four years ago there were no ATMs, no Hotmail, daily power cuts even in Yangon, no land border crossings, not many tourists, and the country was avoided like the plague by 'ethical' tourists. Now it's flavour of the month. You'd need to have a look at the branch for Burma to get reliable info.

Looks pretty good. I assume you will be getting a 30 day visa for VN. I would say that VN warrants the full 30 days. Take s few days off say, Cambodia.

Nationality? I was in Iran in 2008. Not sure if the situation has changed but some nationalities had difficulties getting visas.

Thanks everyone.

I'm Canadian, so from friends I have they tell me they're would not be major problems with the visa. Just have to start in advance, lots. The whole thing is next year anyway. Just planification stage at the moment. I will look in details at border and visa issues later. The general feeling I have from you guys is that it's not too packed nor too relaxed. We both work full time so we will not be looking into rushing destinations. That's what I was afraid of with the general itinerary at first.

I will definitely look into the Burma forum, since it seems to change rapidly or at least, info is not always consistent. I understand it's flavour of the month but before it gets too popular....

Has anyone been to Bangladesh? We were thinking about going from Calcutta, India to Myanmar via Bangladesh, and spending a few days, maybe a few weeks there. Anyone has ideas on this country, except floods and extreme poverty?
Is it feasable? Seems to be more so but again, info I've read is not always the same.

Lastly (taking a chance here), anyone has done the transasia express, from istanbul to Teheran? It seems that flight from Montreal to Istanbul are much less cheaper than to tehran. So I was thinking stay in Istanbul a few days then take the 3 day train ride, if it's super nice....... Very not sure about this so far though.

Thanks!!

Istanbul is certainly worth a few days.

Er, "planification"?

Oh yeah I'm sure it is. I was talking about the ride train from IST to TEH. If it's worth the 3 day spent in train.

Planification...is that not an English word? I'm sorry that I meant something like planning stage, or early planning stage. French word, I thought it just existed haha.

Too late for Burma, I'm afraid.

And yes, Bangladesh is certainly doable. You would need to be there at the right time of year. I haven't been but have researched it (it's on the top of my list for my next trip). I believe the people are the highlight, though they do have quite a lot of other things of interest, including trips on the waterways. Again, you'd need to look up the branch for Bangladesh as it's not a commonly visited country.
