Vienna to Linz

Country forums / Western Europe / Austria

I'm planning to come to Linz, but I haven't found any cheap bus or train ticket.. So if anyone could help me. I need a return ticket, and it would be nice if the price is below 20 euros (for return ticket)..
Or if anyone knows if there is any cheap bus from croatia to linz, or vienna..
Thank you!

Have I understood right, that your main question is getting from Vienna to Linz and back for less than 20 Euros? (not from Croatia to Vienna or Linz)
Well, in my opinion you can forget a train or bus at that price. I agree it "would be nice" but I think it's not realistic, it's a 200 km trip (per way).
The only thing you can try if you want is to look at http://www.mitfahrgelegenheit.at/, where people who want to share their costs offer the trip in their own car, and you can sometimes find it from approx. 10 Euros per trip.

Welcome to Austria. You just got to know the price of our Public Transport system.

There is just the possibility of hitch-hiking that comes to my mind. In Vienna there is a bus stop where (especially on Fridays) mainly Students are waiting for a lift to the West. It's located in the Hütteldorf (western part of Vienna) next to the main road (subway station Ober St. Veit). You could try your luck, although I don't advise you.

amber, flying when and from where in Croatia, Zagreb or Dubrovnik i significantly different?!
Just look at the nearest airport sites to check which companies fly from there. Then you'll look for a wantd destination, or close by (e.g. Bratislava for Wien or Salzburg for Linz).
Germanwings comes to my mind, flying from Croatia but to ..?...

...and for buses. But again, when? Schedule will be limited in winter.

hmm.. well, hmm, i ment that prices are lower, but it seems that i was wrong :/
hitch-hiking is not something i would like to practice...
thanks anyway!

I have the same problem as the young lady above...It is significantly cheaper to fly from Toronto, Canada to Vienna than to connect by air to Linz, so my adult daughter and i would like to know where the train station is, and how much it costs for a train trip from Vienna to Linz (my birthplace, which I have not seen since i was two.)

You can get the info at this site...[www.oebb.at]

Which train station do you mean?...in Vienna or Linz?...

Also, you should really post this as a new question if you're serious about getting the required info...not too many contributors read back further than a few days' posts...

Minimum price for a ticket Vienna-Linz-Vienna is about 60€. (One-way 30€)

But there is the possibility to buy a ÖBB Vorteilscard, which costs 10€. If you're buying one of those you get an immediate discount of 50% on every ticket for a year. You need a photo for that, but you can easily make some at a vending machine.

There are also a lot of students in Vienna, who want to go to Linz, especially on weekends. You can just ask around at the vending machines if they want to buy a group ticket, which costs about 10-13€ a person (with the Vorteilscard!).

I think it's even worth to buy a ÖBB Vorteilscard when you just want to go from Vienna to Linz and back again.

10€ Vorteilscard
15€ Ticket Vienna-Linz (or even a few euros less for a group ticket)
15€ Ticket Linz-Vienna
That's a total of 40€ compared to 60€ for regular tickets.

You get also a 50% discount on regional train tickets, so you can make some daytrips to the rural areas around Linz.

The ÖBB Vorteilscard costs around 100 euros for people > 26 years, not 10! people aging <= 26 years can buy a Vorteilscard for around 30 euros. you get a 50% discount with a Vorteilscard, right, but only if you buy the ticket at the vending machine. if you buy the ticket at the ticket office, you get 45% discount or something.

group tickets have AFAIK to be bought 3 days before departure date. I don't know if this is still true, it was about 2-3 years ago that I ran into the problem of not being able to buy a group ticket any more because we were departing "too" early. Anyway, this regulation is really weird, but so is the whole ÖBB in many aspects. Still, going by train in austria is comparatively cheap and very very nice (especially in the west with all the mountains)

have fun and welcome! ;-)
