Suitable scenic train journey for my itinerary?

Country forums / Western Europe / Switzerland

hi All,

It's gonna be my first visit to swiitzerland with my wife and 22 months old son. I couldn't work out which scenic train journey (I'll prefer bernina) i can fit in my itinerary especially without doing long journeys to get to the scenic train. We'll be free after 1pm on 13 Sep and my flight back to london is at 3:30pm on 15 Sep. Please advise:

9 Sep, Friday
- 11pm Flight landed at Zurich
- Hotel/B&B (Zurich)

10 Sep, Sat (Zurich/Lucern)
- Rhine Fall
- Train to Lucern (1 hr)
- Lion Monument/Chapel Bridge/Lake Lucern
- Hotel/B&B (Lucern)

11 Sep, Sun (Lucern/Wengen)
- Titlis or Pilatus or Rigi?
- Train to Wengen (3 hr)
- Hotel/B&B (Wengen)

12 Sep, Mon (Wengen)
- Lauterbrunen falls (Trummelbach Falls, Reichenbach Falls)
- Look around for breathtaking views
- Hotel/B&B (Wengen)

13 Sep, Tue (Wengen/?)
- Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch? (hopefully will be done with it by 1pm, so we're free after that)
- CONFUSED: Scenic Train to destination for either bernina, glacier, golden line?
- Hotel/B&B (?)

14 Sep Wed (?)
- Reserved for selected scenic train journey
- Hotel/B&B (?)

15 Sep Thur (Zurich)
- Train to Zurich

  1. Sept after 1 pm. go to Zermatt
    14.Sept train Zermatt to St.Moritz
15.Sept train St. Moritz to Zürich first train 04.56

your trip with a 22 month old son ??? Zürich-Rhein_Fall-Luzern with luggage on your own and not an organized group...have fun.
-Wengen not the best place for Schilthorn or Lauterbrunnen falls as you call it.
-11. Sept do you take the luggage to Titlis or Rigi...?
maybe I am wrong and you have your own transport and have the luggage in your car

Some good points from #1. I will just add that the route between Zermatt and St. Moritz is that of the Glacier Express. It is of course a breath-taking and spectacular line, although I preferred the 'Golden Pass' route.

Anyway, all the journeys that you plan to take are of exceptional beauty.

It doesn't make any sense to go to Zermatt or St. Moritz just for a few hours. Stay at least one full day at both places.
It's perfectly possible to combine Bernina Express and Glacier Express. But in this case, you will have no time for Wengen/Jungfraujoch/Schilthorn etc.
Note that the mountain scenery around Zermatt (numerous glaciers and peaks higher than 4000m, among them the highest mountain of Switzerland) is more impressive than Wengen etc.

Count a full day for Lucerne and Lugano (without boat trips), a second day for Lugano - Tirano - Bernina - St. Moritz, a third one for St. Moritz, a fourth for Glacier Express to Zermatt, a fifth for Zermatt.
The train ride from Zermatt to Zurich airport lasts 3 1/2 hrs, trains every hour.

How can you plan to be down from Jungfrau before 1 PM and expect to enjoy it? I might be going for the first time in October, and I would think that it warrants at least until late in the afternoon to get the most out of the experience.

4

Skip Reichenbach Falls. The trip up is nice enough but it just isn't worth the ride. And these falls are not in Lauterbrunnen, they are in Meiringen.

5

Bitizenbon: If you start at Wengen at 7.15, you will be at the Joch at 8.52. If you don't hike to Moenchsjoch, you can perfectly be back at Wengen at 13.04 (Jungfraujoch dp 11.30). If the weather is extremely bad, you may got fozen even earlier.

Apologies for the late reply i didn't know i've to watch my own post as well as it was my first post here.

  • I've decided to not do Jungfrau, i'll do shilthorn instead because of cost and height factor, so i hope i'll be back by 1-2pm.

  • I'm happy to skip Rienchenbach falls, as i'll just cover lauterbrunen.

  • That's strange as i've heard wengen is the most beautiful place to stay and explore surrouding area, also i thought its an ideal location to explore Bernes Oberland

  • I've been reading about scenic trains and mostly people prefer Bernina over Glacier, so how about taking train to Chur from Wengen (5hrs) on 13 Sep then take Bernina from Chur to tirano, bus from tirano tu Lugano on 14 Sep (all day) then take train from Lugano to Zurich (3hrs) on 15Sep.

  • I'm assuming i'll be checking-in my luggage at train stations or leave it in hotels where i can

7

Is Glacier train from Visp to Chur is reallty scenic? as this is looking shorter route to me and i can easily take train from chur to zurich afterwards. Thanks

8

Complete confusion, no comment!

9

If you skip Jungfraujoch and go instead to Schilthorn then I would sleep in Mürren and not in Wengen.

I think you are planning this too much. Virtually every possible train ride in Switzerland offers wonderful views. My experience: I once spent a one-week family holiday there and we had rail passes. Every evening, we planned the spectacular journey for the following day; every morning we over-slept and ended up getting to the station after our train had gone and just jumped on something leaving the station soon after we arrived that seemed vaguely promising. Without exception, we enjoyed just about the most scenic train journeys I have ever experienced.

11

I think you guys are right, let me rework my itinerary and plan something practical.

At last i've finalized my itinerary, i've taken out most of the long journeys. I hope it's quite balanced now, will be booking hotels now.
