Snow in Northern Germany?

Hi All,

We will be having Christmas in Timmendorfer Strand, near Luebeck, and I am hoping and hoping I will have a white christmas - especially since we are coming from Australia. What would my chances be? And also a week before christmas we will be in Munich and Austria, would it be snowing then as well?

I don't know where you'll be staying in Austria so I can't comment on the likelihood of encountering snow here. All I can say is that it's more likely to experience a white christmas in Munich than in Lübeck as the winters in northern Germany are comparatively mild. It's even more likely to come across snow in Austria at elevations higher than Munich. Note that the weather has been very erratic in the last few years. Last winter was by far the warmest on record, with very little snow even in mountainous regions. The winter before that was one of the snowiest on record, though.

Slim.
Snow or not is a thing of a few centigrades in Germany. The lower you're and the closer to the sea (which is rather "warm"), the less likely is snow. And Timmendorfer Strand is damn low and close to the sea.

Here your chances for snow are at least much better.

Slim at best. Probability of a white Christmas in Timmendorfer Strand is close to zero. (My parents live across the bay from Timmendorf)

Chances: 1% snow, 99% no snow! Munich will have more chances but still very low and snow in Munich will be melting fast and won´t be areally good experience inside the city itself. In Austria you will have more chances depending where you are. If you go to Innsbruck (a great place) you take the cable car to Nordkette and you will have snow for sure!

From Munich you can reach the mountains in 1-2 hours and there will (probably) be snow up at higher elevations.
No reason to expect snow at low altitudes anywhere in Europe except northern - inland- half of Scandinavia this early.

As said before the chances that you will have snow at Timmendorfer Strand are low, the chances are bigger in Munich and Austria

in the northern parts chances are soso. in austria and munich better(snowing right now 100 km away from munich)
