Pyrenees with 12yr oldCountry forums / Western Europe / Spain
I'm planning a trip with my 12 year old daughter in July in the Spanish Pyrenees. Any suggestions for relatively easy circular hiking routes in the Catalan or Andora Pyrenees? Suggestions on hut to hut hikes are also welcome, she is a good walker for her age.
In the Catalan Pyrenees I would suggest Aiguestortes National Park. There's a good network of mountain huts and the terrain is not very difficult. You have the possibility to go on circular hiking routes, although at that time of the year mountain huts could be full. | 1
Ordesa Nat'l Park has a hike that goes up to the glacial cirque called "Cola del caballo." It is a full day hike but OK for a 12 year old as long as she's not too much of a whiner. On the French side, I've been to Gavarnie which also has a nice hike up to a glacial cirque. | 2
The circular walk from the car park in Ordesa is probably my all-time number one walk. It's quite long, but all the very steep climb (up the Senda de Cazadores) is at the beginning, and the views are stunning. The only proviso I would give is that I would avoid at weekends and certainly in August, as it gets very crowded, but that goes for any top Pyrenean walk in summer. | 3
