Puttgarden - What to do there?

Country forums / Western Europe / Germany

I am staying with my family and friends in Denmark for two weeks in beginning of August. There is a ferry to Puttgarden close to the place we are staying.
Would it be a nice thing to do for a day to go to Puttgarden with the ferry? What can we do there if we want to stay there for a day together with kids (3-8 years)?

I am happy to have som tips if this would be a nice day for Norwegians!

Puttgarden itself is pretty much only a ferry terminal.

Id say that you need a car to make it a worthwhile day trip. With a car you could either explore the island Fehmarn which is a popular holiday destination in August or go to Heiligenhafen (22 km from Puttgarden). Heiligenhafen is quite a nice small fishing town and offers enough to keep a day tripper happy. Including shopping. If you dont have a car at your disposal, I would ditch the whole idea.

OR there are a few trains, buy a Schleswig Holstein dayticket for 25 or 27 euro (is for the WHOLE family, up to 5 people), but CHECK times on bahn.de as there are just a very few, and go to LUEBERCK=the first major city some 60/70 mins onward, which is quite a nice partly medieval towncentre and famous for 'marzipan'=some sweet candy
the ferry offers still cheap booze+tobacco, many people only go on-never leave, jst to drink or buy

DB timetable
From: Roedby Faerge
To: Luebeck
and select as means of transport "only local transport".

There is e.g. a connection Roedby dep. 08:15. With enough time to buy a Schleswig-Holstein Ticket (EUR 29,00) from one of the ticket machines in Puttgarden. Departure in Puttgarde is at 09:22 (thus past 9am - the SH Ticket is on weekdays only valid past 9am).

Lübeck - the queen of the Hanseatic League - is really worth a visit. You can also visit the Sand World in Travemünde - the harbour/beach of Lübeck.
