Munich Travel Card

Hello,

Is it possible to buy Munich travel cards before they begin or the day you buy them, do they begin?

Also, are there university student rates?

Cheers for the help! I am looking for a zone 1-8 card.

Munich is not my home turf yet afaik yes, this is perfectably doable (further, you may even choose the day of beginning for weekly or monthly passes) - only some single tickets/daycards from vending machines are already validated for instant use. perhaps best to start at one of the service centres (http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/service/service-centres/index.html), which will be able to give detailed advice.

the only student discounts I'm aware of (anywhere in Germany) are for local students and apply to the whole term (still a bargain, though).

zone 1-8 looks rather large to me. depending on how much you'll be moving between these zones, it might be worth checking for a travelcard some sizes smaller and buy individual and/or connecting tickets for the rides beyond.
