Marriage proposal in Paris

Country forums / Western Europe / France

I'm going to propose to my girlfriend (for 8 years) in Paris this summer. I need help and suggestions about where in Paris to do this.
1. At top of Eiffel tower late at night. Is there a platform at the top, or should I do it in one of the restaurants?
2. Nice, quiet and romantic restaurant. Any good suggestion about which restaurant?
3. Picnic in a garden on a blanket. Any suggestion about which garden? Allowed to drink whine in the gardens?
4. Any other hot tips?

Thanks!

  1. There are platforms at the different levels so you don't need to go to one of the (pricey) restaurants at the Eiffel Tower. Sunset is also a lovely time to be on the tower. Or you could go to the Trocadero (across the river from the Eiffel Tower) and propose with it as a backdrop!
    2. Sorry, don't know any restaurants to recommend.
    3. Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuilieries (apologies for the spelling) - or picnic on one of the bridges along the Seine such as Pont des Arts. Yes, you can bring wine into the gardens.
    4. Some quirky thoughts: If it's there, go on the ferris wheel outside the Louvre. Or climb the towers of Notre Dame and propose among the gargoyles. Great stories for the grandkids!
Best of luck and hope you both have a lovely time. Cheers.

or……
on the Pont des Arts, unique wood bridge of Paris, in front of the Louvres
during a cruise on the Seine with bateaux-mouches or a ship-restaurant at night

my personnal experience (hum, hum, 10 years ago :-) he proposes to me on the panoramic bar on the top of the tower porte Maillot (west of Paris) : greatest view upon the city of lights !

bonne chance

#2 refers to the panoramic bar of the Hotel Concorde La Fayette at Porte Maillot. Accessible for non-hotel guests. Beautiful view indeed. Especially after dark. Prices are reasonable before 9 or 9.30 pm, after that each drink is 22 euros or so.
The Eiffel tower stays open quite late in the summer, 10pm I think. The Jules Verne restaurant in the tower is quite expensive but might be appropriate for the occasion... Reserve well ahead.
Trocadero would be nice too. Beautiful view on the tower. You may know that at the hour, the lights tinkle for about 5 minutes. Really quite amazing when you're as close as Trocadero. From nightfall until 1am I think.
Picnic is easier in Jardin de Luxembourg than in the Tuileries. The former has relatively big grass fields where you can sit. The view on the Senate is really nice. Gets crowded on weekends.

Just returned from Paris. I agree with the previous post regarding Trocadero. A wonderful spot to propose. Another option: Have a drink at one of the wonderful sidewalk cafes along the Champs Elysees which has an outstanding view of the Arc de Triomphie. Cross the Avenue. At the mid section, stop look up at the Arc at night when the lights are at a wonderful golden glow, and propose. Best of luck!
