Lagos Portugal to San Sebastion

Country forums / Western Europe / Portugal

does anyone have any info on the best way to travel from Lagos in Portugal to San Sebastion in Spain, I have never travelled by train in europe as we always hire a car but i think it would take too long driving . anyone got ideas on this ?

You could of course go from Tunes, bus or taxi from Lagos. To Lisbon-Porto-Vigo-San Sebastian but whichever way you go it is going to take a long time, Vigo to San Sebastian is 11 hours!

The distance is about 1100 kilometer, bur hiring a car would be expensive, because you'll get a hefty drop-off fee for hiring in one country and dropping off in another.
The train-connections between Spain and Portugal are rather limited, only Lisbon to Madrid and Porto to Vigo. I fear you have first to go to Lisbon, then to Madrid and finally from Madrid to San Sebastian. Another possibility could be to take a bus, but it'll be a long trip. There is a bus from Faro to Madrid as well as to Sevilla, see http://www.alsa.es. The trip to Madrid takes 17 hours and 30 minutes. I did not check the time to go to Seville. From Seville you take the fast train to Madrid and then a "normal" train to San Sebastian.

Probably the fastest option is: bus or train Lagos to Lisbon (about 4 hrs), Lisbon to Bilbao by plane (2 or 3 daily direct flights with TAP and Vueling) and then bus Bilbao to San Sebastian (about 1 hr).
Or Lagos to Sevilla by bus (6 hrs), flight Sevilla - Bilbao (Vueling 1 or 2 direct flights per day) and then bus again.
You are looking at a full day of travel and you probably will have to overnight somewhere en route.

there's a direct and enjoyable nighttrain Lisbon-San Sebastian, I assume you can book at www.renfe.es.

for Lagos-Lisbon, you can take either bus or train (which I'd prefer).

use www.bahn.com for timetables.

Hi shinser!

Welcome to TT!

If you want to make it by train: train from Lagos to Tunes, train from Tunes to Lisbon (Oriente station) and overnight train from Lisbon (Oriente station) to San Sebastián. For more info, take a look at the web of the Portuguese Railways.

By air, take a look at skyscanner to see what are the fares on your travel dates. It'll (probably) be cheaper if you look for flights to Bilbao (e.g.: Easyjet has direct flights from Lisbon to Bilbao) and continue to San Sebastián by bus than if you look for fares to San Sebastián.

The train-connections between Spain and Portugal are rather limited, only Lisbon to Madrid and Porto to Vigo.

...and Lisbon to Irún (on the Spanish side of the border)/Hendaye (on the French side of the border) (the famous Sud Express train) :)
