How to Snowboard Austria and visit Florence in 10 days with wife?

Country forums / Western Europe / Austria

My wife and would like to visit Austria and Florence (10 days) mid Winter 2011 (Any Austria/Italy Holidays to avoid?).
We'd like to split the trip up between snowboarding in Austria and visiting Florence.
My wife is learning to snowboard, I've been snowboarding for 15+ years and we are both in our early 30's.

My wife hates changing hotel rooms, so a two destination trip might be our limit.
Traveling from Philadelphia (or Newark, NJ airport)

A few questions I have:
First; anyone have a perfect Itinerary for this kinda trip, or done similar?
I'm thinking the train be the best option for traveling given the time of year, anyone agree?
Thinking R/T from Innsbruck or an open jaw flight (from where though?), thoughts on that?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.
Kevin.

If you would snowboard in Northern Italy (Piemonte), things would be much easier. You could then fly to Milano Malpensa, go to a mountain resort up to about 150 km around this airport, go from there by bus and train to Florence (Milan - Florence is just 2 hours by train) and fly back from Milano Malpensa again.

If you want to go to the Austrian Land of Vorarlberg (Zuers, Lech, Montafon) or Western Tyrol (St. Anton), you best fly to Zurich. The train ride from St. Anton to Florence lasts a whole day (8-9 hrs).
For Eastern Tyrol or Salzburg, fly to Munich.
In both cases, you best fly back either from Rome or from Milan.
