Here's one I cant find on the search engine..Country forums / Western Europe / Netherlands
When I enter the Shengen Region through Amsterdam I will only have one single blank page left in my passport. I'll have to apply for a new Australian passport through our consulate in The Hague. No real problem, a 10 day process period and its all done.. BUT... I will have my entry stamp into Shengen in my used passport and ( of course ) that used passport will be cancelled by the Ozi Consulate once my new passport is issued.. They will return my used passport back to me but my entry stamp into Shengen will be null and void too, I guess, since the passport it was stamped into would now be cancelled.. So, Once I get my new passport in my hands, how do I go about getting another Shengen stamp ?? Thanks.
Oooooops, sorry for typo.. That should be "Schengen"... Cheers. | 1
my entry stamp into Shengen will be null and void too, I guess Your guess is not correct. The old passport will of course be void but not the entry stamp as such. Reason: The Australian embassy/consulate can't declare anything void another organization such as the Schengen authorities has legally issued. I'm however pretty sure that this will be discussed here wildly in just a minute :- | 2
Thanks mate. So, OK and fair enough that the Ozi consulate cant cancel a visa issued by another organisation. Do I have to, 1... Do the right thing and seek out how I get another stamp in my new passport.. Obviously the Schengen authorities will have information on when I entered the Zone and, having my new and old passport to prove "it is me", then I'm thinking / hoping the process of getting another stamp will be easy and painless. 2.. do nothing and hold on to my old passport as proof of entry ? Thanks. | 3
so I'm a bit confused as to what I must do so as to make my departure from Schengen hassle free. Ask the consulate in The Hague. or the authorities back in Aus. before you leave. | 4
Quote from the Netherlands embassy in the UK (it's as good as any other Dutch embassy's website)... http://www.netherlands-embassy.org.uk/home/index.php?i=160 Documents to submit for a short stay tourist visa You will always need a passport or official travel document accepted by the Schengen countries. All passports should be valid for at least three months after departure from the territory of the Schengen countries and contain a blank visa page ().* Ie, you need to get a new passport first. Or will the passport still be valid from a date point of view, you've just filled it up? | 5
Carry the old passport too. But really nobody cares. You may be in a computer for one country. No single mainframe for Sch, I read on here. So don't worry about it. | 6
stay as long as you like. | 7
If you are heading back to Australia afterwards, the Australian embassy will likely ask you to apply for a new passport when you get back home. If you are continuing your travels, then you may have to show your used passport (which you'll get back) when you leave together with your new one. | 8
The information I have got from the Ozi Consulate's web site in The Hague is that there is no problem getting a passport re-newed there.. It takes 10 days processing so long as I provide all relevent info and I.D and so, since I will have a current passport ( 5 years old, and valid till 2016, with the chip inside ) to produce, then it would seem it is as painless as getting it made up in Oz. I can even choose to have a 32 page or 64 page passport made up at the same cost as getting one done in Oz.. That being $226 (32 page) or $340 (64 page). The only hiccup is that they urge us Ozi's to make sure we have the appropriate sized photos, as The Netherlands use different sized photos for thier passports. I have three blank pages in my passport right now but, I will be touring through a few Asian countries before arriving in The Netherlands. I expect to have one full page and a few spare spots on half used pages remaining when I walk up to the immigration folk at Amsterdam airport. I may be coming home from The Netherlands via India and so the Indians require 3 spare pages before they will consider placing a sticker / visa in a passport, or so the Indian web site says.. Cheers guys. Edited by: frugaldugal | 9
Have you noticed that some Asian countries require the passport to be valid for at least three months (if not even 6 months) when you enter the country. Why don’t you apply for a new passport before leaving Australia? That would solve your problem. | 10
Wow that's expensive. And I though US/UK passport were expensive. | 11
I would email them. Although some countries allow this, most only issue regular passports only to citizens permanently resident in a country. Most other embassies only give temporary papers to tourists to enable them to return to their home country. It may be different with Australian embassies (actually at a price of $340 it better be) but your really need to make absolutely sure - the last thing you want is to arrive in The Hague just to be told you need to fly back to Australia before being able to continue your travels. | 12
Further to the info above, I checked http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/assisting_within_limits.html and it says "Australian consular officials: can issue emergency passports or travel documents" which may indicate that you indeed cannot get a permanent passport unless legally resident overseas. So you really need to call the embassy before you leave. | 13
I wish to use my current passport for a few reasons.. 1.. I have pages left to use.. This will be my 4th passport in 10 years.. I want my moneys worth.. Yes those prices are quiet high for a passport... I am Frugal..lol 2... I already have one Indian Visa in my current passport to use on the way over.. If I send off my passport to be renewed now, then I will have to send off that new passport to get the Indian Visa again.. 10 days for an ozi passport to be issued and about the same to get another Indian Visa.. Im cutting it a bit too short. I have sent an email off to the passport people here in Oz. Cheers | 14
It may take more than ten business days. The embassy in the Netherlands has to send your application to the Australian High Commission in London as it is the only facility in Europe capable of issuing e-passports. If I were you, I would get a new passport while still in Australia. | 15
there is really no problem. First of all, you don;t have a visa. You are granted 90 days visa-free stay. The stamp is merely proof that you entered on a certain date- and they might not even stamp you but just scan your passport. When you get a new passport, you retain your old one. The stamp is still proof that you entered on a certain date. As would be your boarding pass from your original flight. The stamp in itself is not a document that has any legal value, like giving you teh right to be in Schengen. You have that right anyway (for 90 days) There is really no need to worry. The worst that can happen is that when you leve, the immigration officer at Departure notices that you have a new passport and asks you when you entered schengen, and he may ask to see your old passport with stamp as proof. That's all. | 16
There's no problem. You may need to show the stamp in your cancelled passport if anyone asks but other wise not a problem. | 17
Thanks guys, very helpful.. I have re-studied the Ozi Consulates web site in The Hague. The site explains nothing what-so-ever in regards to only issueing a travel document that would only allow me to fly home. You would think they would have in big bold print that they only offerred emergency documents and the applicant would have to fly home to arrange a new passport.. Cheers everyone.. I will get back to ya's as to what feedback I get from the email I've sent to the Ozi government. | 18
They're usually only issued as a last resort. Perhaps if someone needed to get back to Oz for a funeral, but there wasn't time to issue a passport. They really really do not want to issue one of these. | 19
I have just made a call to the Passport Office, here in Australia. The young lady assured me that I can indeed apply for, and receive a full passport from ANY Australian Consulate overseas regardless if it has been lost, stolen or a simple renewal. To put it completely to bed, I emphasised to her that I wanted to apply at The Hague and even though I have fully read and examined their web site, I was seeking assurance that a full passport will be produced for me there in The Netherlands, either a 32 or 64 pager.. She once again told me that " of course they will ".. I then explained to her that although I had read and understood those to be the facts, some people were claiming that only an emergency travel note would be offered for me to fly home to Australia to organise the complete renewal there. Pheeeew, glad thats all sorted then... Giddyup. Cheers guys. | 20
Glad it's working out.
I've re-read the thread. There's only one person who said that, I hope he comes back and reads your last response in order to update his knowledge. | 21
Thanks.. This is not the only forum I have thrown the question to and received the "emergency paper" response.. All good then.. Cheers. Edited by: frugaldugal | 22
It's alright for you Aussies, us Brits have to hoof it to the consulate in Amsterdam for a new passport. Right pain in the arse that was when I used to live within half a mile of the embassy in The Hague. Problem I had then was that the issuing office code was "NLD" on my new passport. The immigration guys at Heathrow did not like that at all. I used to get the third degree for the following 10 years cos it looked out of the ordinary, every time I passed through Heathrow, without fail. | 23
OP did you check if the consulate issues passports to non residents? Some countries consulates do not issue any passport except for emergency documents in case the passport has been lost or stolen or you're actually permanently residing in the country where you request the passport. Oops I now saw your post 20 so it should be OK Edited by: TheDevil | 24
But the cool people all live in Amsterdam Fwoggie. So that was your first mistake. | 25
#25 Not so, I lived in Scheveningen, 30 metres from the crazy pianos under the Kurhaus :) Great place to be, apart from the bastard crazy traffic jams in the summer. | 26
Ah, I remember a great night in Crazy Pianos... | 27
LMAO, yeah, you and all the cool dudes. | 28
