We're planning an adventure with our car to get to Naxos in November. From google searches, a ferry from italy to Igoumenitsa or Petrias seem to be the only viable options if we don't want to drive through Albania etc.

We're keen to try a different route, possibly via Crete or other islands. Does anyone have any experience of these? Some of the ferry reviews look quite hideous and I'd rather not spend 24 hours on a ferry if possible.

Well, we took the ferry from Ancona to Patras once and it was more like a cruise ship, very nice, but more expensive since a cabin is nice for the over night journey, you can check if you find something from Bari or Brindisi to Igoumenitsa, that would shorten the cruising time down to 8 or 10 hours.

24 hours from where do you want to leave? Even Ancona-Patras didn't take that long if I remember right, but it's been a while.

Albania is out of the way anyway.
The normal road itinerary goes from London via Cologne - Frankfurt - Linz - Schoberpass - Graz - Zagreb - Beograd - Skopje - Thessaloniki to Piraeus and then by ferry to Naxos.
If you want to remain all inside the European Union, travel from Linz via Budapest - Szeged - Temesvar - Iron Gate - Maglavit - Calafat - Vidin - Botevgrad - Sofia - Blagoevgrad - Kulata to Thessaloniki.

Adria ferries to Patras leave from Venice (36 hrs; twice weekly), Ancona (25 hrs, daily), Bari (22 hrs, daily), Brindisi (19 hrs, 3times weekly).

There is no car ferry from Naxos to Crete in November. You will have to travel via Piraeus.
