Cycling Lagos-Sagres in a day and back - Doable?

Hi All,

We'll be in the Algrave this week and planning to be based in Lagos. We planned to take a day trip to Sagres and as we rely on public transport we thought to rent a bike.
Is anyone know the route?
Is it flat, or hilly? I heard that there is a cycle route through the Algarve can that be followed, or do we need to follow a motorway?

According to http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes it is 33 kilometer and would take 2 hours and 21 minutes. In my opinion that should not be a problem.

it depends on whether you want to follow the roads or stay mainly of road, you can follow the ecovia which goes from Sagres to Spain. it is a lovely route passing nice villages and wonderful countryside, just after the town of Luz you should cut through a golf course avoidng the main road or with the right bikes there is a coastal path mainly used for walking but cyclists do use it.

If you follow the ecovia and take the short cut through the golf course (there is a proper road) it is 38km. Whilst people do follow the main road it is not the nicest cycling and with lots of fast traffic. It is failry easy cycling with not too much climbing.

Sorry just read this wrong that you were starting in Sagres just do the reverse route.

There´s the Ecovia between Lagos and Sagres, a bit longer maybe than Liberat´s viamichelin route.
I only cycled a part of it near Salerna and it has some pretty hefty but not too long (500 m to 2 km If I remember well) climbs.

But great route, much better than highway. Also viit Obispo for a nice break.

The ecovia (a bike road, mostly on dirt roads) between Lagos and Sagres is a nice way to know the countryside and the less turistic places, however a bit hilly.

If you are used to bike on dirt and ofroad than this the way to go.

On the other side you have in fact a road you can follow until Sagres but, as someone already said, can be a bit crowded.

Anyway, you can try both taking the ecovia to Sagres and returning on the national road.

There are not many other alternatives like secondary roads. These possibility is really complicated.

I guide bike tours crossing the Algarve and the less prepared people have some difficulty on the section (Lagos/Sagres) via de ecovia but is really beautiful.
