see that car hire Auto Europe advertised specials and that Portugal is £20 a day and Spain is £11 per day - is this indicative of the differences in prices: because I am travelling in both coutries and, if its cheaper in Spain, I shall rather fly into Spain than Portugal.

I would appreciate your help. Thanks

But where will you be dropping off your car?

Incidentally, I've just checked the AutoEurope wesbite and I can't see any significant price differences between the two countries.

(Did you really intend to post this question four times?)

Where did you get those figures from? I don't see any dramatic price differences on their website.

Auto Europe are always advertising "cheap" deals but they appear to be rarely achievable headline rates.

If you're after cheap car hire, Travelsupermarket or Economy Car Rentals are my usual first ports of call...

Also, when comparing different car hire offers, you need to make sure you understand the small print and compare like with like, for instance in terms of the mileage (unlimited or not, cost of exceeding the limit) and, very importantly, insurance cover and the amount of the excess (i.e., the amount which you have to pay yourself in the case of damage).

You could also check Holidayautos, another broker.

In Spain especially rental prices will depend a lot on the pick up location but also on the time of the year. When and from where would you like to rent?
Having used AutoEurope many times, i think i had my cheapes rental ever last year in Porto at € 15 per day, fully insured with refundable excess and everything else included. For Spain they offer 'no excess' for some very competitive destinations which is always better. This condition is always marked in red below the list of the types of cars.
