Hi all. I am traveling in late April, early May with two companions to South Africa with a stop in Europe. We hardly have any time in Europe (one week at most). We are planning to fly into Amsterdam and want to see Paris and Luxembourg. Why Luxembourg you ask? Because I was born there. I was adopted when I was six months old and have never seen it. I know this is a ridiculously small amount of time to be there, but it is what it is. I am in information overload from the internet and am wondering what you think about flying into Amsterdam and taking the train to Luxembourg and then on to Paris and flying out of Paris to South Africa? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Why not spend an entire week in Luxembourg. I have, and it allowed me to almost see the entire country to my satisfaction. We had a car so that we could easily travel about the country, and stayed the entire week in the most unusual and best place that I've stayed in Europe, in a modern apartment in a medieval tower of the old town wall in Echternach. The town rents them out inexpensively by the week and you will have the entire tower to yourself, possibly including the only access to the town wall on either side as at Tower #3.
As an American, I would suggest visiting the American military cemetery in Hamm where General Patton is buried. I'm sure that the country's tourist office would be more than glad to send you free information on things to see and do there, just google.
I agree with #1, if Luxembourg is of particular interest, hire a car and drive through the countryside (Vianden, Echternach etc). It is much more interesting and picturesque than if you just restrict yourself to Luxembourg City,

I agree with the others: See the countryside, not only Luxemburg city. Especially as it is your home country. It offers hilly areas, forests, beautiful rivers, quiet villages, great (French style) food, even wine is grown along the Moselle. My recommendation in Luxemburg: Rent a car. The fuel is cheap there (actually the cheapest in Western Europe besides Gibraltar). Consider that the trip to Paris takes 400 km, not much time will be left in this city afterwards.

Luxembourg is a nice enough place, though spending a week there might not be very high on most people's list if you don't happen to have some connection to the place. I don't see any particular problem with flying in to Amsterdam, hopping on the train to Luxembourg and then on to Paris - just make sure there is a train connection after your arrival time in Amsterdam otherwise book somewhere to stay for the night there and head off early in the morning. The Benelux countries are not all that big, and transport amongst them is generally pretty quick and efficient.
That said, the Deutsche Bahn site tells me you're looking at a 10 hour train trip, including a four hour stop in Jemalle, if you go in the evening. I'd suggest your best bet is to try to go during the day, with a change in Brussels, which will take several hours less.

For those tower apartments look at http://www.echternach-tourist.lu/en/medieval-towers which is on the official town website which you can also visit from there.
