Beware Europcare Car Hire!!!Country forums / Western Europe / Portugal
I wish I had checked reviews for Europcar before I rented a car through Hotwire. Nothing but a bunch of crooks. Booking and picking up and even returning my car was easy as pie. No problems at all. But when I got my invoice??? A difference of over $500 in charges was charged to my credit card over what they had originally quoted me for the vehicle. When I try to email? no response and it's been multiple attempts over a week. When I try to call? I'm always "disconnected" or I get hung up on because they "can't hear me" as soon as I mention I'm having a problem with an invoice. And apparently this is a VERY COMMON occurance. Never again, Europcar. Never again!!! Anyone else had this happen??
I think we get one of these a month and usually over car rental companies and usually the person who is posting has never posted on this site before. Sorry for you loss. | 1
You might challenge the bogus credit card charge with your bank. You need to do it in writing and soon. Next time, go with the agency "AutoEurope." | 2
You probably didn't read the fine print, or misunderstood the instructions. I've been renting with Europcar (through Auto Europe) for more than 30 years - 200+ rentals - and never had a problem. Rental car scams do happen, but there are an equal or greater number of clueless renters who don't understand the terms. Rent through AutoEurope next time, and ALWAYS read the voucher carefully. | 3
Europcar are becoming worst by the week we use them through our company and we are regularly charged for things we did not ask for the latest one is charging for FULL INSURANCE without being asked for it. Once they charged me fees for returning a car late ( i was changing cars) even though I had the proof that I had picked up the other car before the time they said I left the car. 6 weeks ago I was offered an upgrade for €7 a day when i came to sign the agreement i notice the charge was €21 a day! Saying that your charges could be toll related. | 4
I travel at least twice, sometimes 3 times a year. A majority of those trips involve renting a car in some form or other. In the 25 yrs or so I've been travelling, I'm pretty sure I have some experience in this area. Move along, please. This has been the worst rental company ever. | 5
I've tried asking for a listing of the tolls, with no luck. We kept track of them as we went through to keep an idea... $200 tops, definitely not over $500. | 6
I've given them until after business today to respond, at which point I will be contacting my financial institution to have the charges reversed until they can provide me with a DETAILED invoice on what I actually agreed to. I even turned it in with more gas than I had at pickup and they charged me for refuelling. Um, no.

Can you say please from which point (city, airport etc) you took the car from Europcar? | 8
how much was the refuelling? We got stung once with another company on refuelling where it cost over 200 euro due to their fees and cost of fuel of ~2x actual cost AND for a full tank even though it wasn't empty. I have found a number of other places that just charged the actual cost of the fuel which is fine by me. | 9
