Barcelona

Country forums / Western Europe / Spain

Hey lovelies

I plan on being in Barcelona for 4 days next week! It's my first time! Anything I must do? Or any unique places not to be missed? Thanks for all your help!

Could start with a guidebook which should cover all eventualities - paper one rather than eBook.

Lonely Planet one appears to be quite comprehensive (planning a trip for self and GF at mo...).

Also try search function on top left of this page or Google, Yahoo or Bing.

I agree with #1, get a guide book and / or do some research online. There are no "must see or do" places - its up to your interests, what you are looking for etc. What I like is not necessarly what you like.

My highlights in Barcelona: Park Guell (a beautiful and magical park created by Gaudi, with good views over the city), the Sagrada Familia (book tickets ahead to avoid having to wait for ages) and the Boqueteria (the colorful old market). Its also great to walk around and get lost. And of course, enjoying the great food.

4 days should be just enough to see the typical highlights you can find anywhere on the internet. In my opinion, one of the best things you can do is just get lost in the old city center (Ciutat Vella which comprises Gotico, El Born and El Raval) - around nearly every corner there is something of interest.

I could recommend you a bunch of other places of interest but you ll probably want to first visit all the usual stuff first. I say usual, but that does not mean they are really worthwhile.

Oh yes, reserve online for Park Guell and Sagrada Familia to avoid queues.

We were in Barcelona three days ago. We especially liked:

  • walking the entire length of La Rambla
  • the Sagrada Familia Cathedral by Antoni Gaudí (online ticket essential)
  • the La Boqueria Market is great for all types of food
  • the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat was superb (buy your ticket for €29.50 at Pl. Espanya Railway Station)

We bought a T-10 Metro ticket (ten trips) for €9.90, however you can also buy 2-day or 3-day unlimited tickets ... and the Metro is an excellent way of getting around.

If you are really interested in Gaudi architecture and you would also want to visit other houses such as La Pedrera/Casa Mila or Casa Battlo, you also better book your tickets ahead in order to avoid long queues.
Like Nathalie2 wrote, there are no must sees and it all depends on your interests. After all, there must be a reason why you have decided to go to Barcelona?

You should do more research on your own to identify what sort of spots/activities you'd like to do. Start your research by having a look here:

Yeah sorry I was supposed to have more time off and was planning on hitting Greece and Italy so that is where I had been doing all my research on, but something came off and now I only have 4 days, so I'm planning this trip at the last minute. But thanks for all the advice
