Athens Accomodations

Country forums / Western Europe / Greece

Hi. Will be getting off a 2 week cruise on Saturday, November 24th. My flight back to the US is Sunday @ noon. Soooooo....

1. Is there a train from Athens port (Pireeas(?)) to downtown? How long does it take? How much does it cost? Is it worth it to take a cab?

2. Any suggestions for a "not too expensive" clean hotel maybe with a view of the Acropolis?

3. How much time should we allow for getting to the airport? Again, Is there a train? How long does it take? How much does it cost? Is it worth it to take a cab?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Yes. Take the "Green Line" from the Metro Station to the Monastiraki Station. This will take about 20 minutes. Fare is no more than 1 euro. Not worth taking a cab
unless you have a lot of luggage.

    2. Check the Attalos Hotel. There's a rooftop lounge with excellent views of the Acropolis and they are a short walk from the Monastiraki Metro Station.

    3. Again from Monastiraki there is a Metro Train to the airport. The price is 6 euro each or 2 for 10 euro. It takes about 45 minutes. Same answer about a cab.

The passenger exit [E 10] for the cruise liners is quite a walk to the metro station.. [I'ld estimate it to be possibly more than 20 minutes].. so depending on your endurance + luggage, possibly also consider taking a taxi to Athens central. The taxi fare shouldn't be more than 15-20 euro.
Nevertheless, as stated abv, take the metro to the airport [with the airport sign on it, every 30 minutes dep from Monasteraki], or the metro [not specifically to the airport] to Doukissis Plakentias metro station [blue line again from Monasteraki or Syndagma] and connect with the suburban rail [Proastiakos] to the airport.

Dianab1 makes a good point about the distance from the cruise ship to the Metro Station. Here's a map so you can get yourself oriented to the Port of Piraeus facilities. You need to find out which dock your cruise ship will be using to determine just how far away you'll be.

Another very good hotel with panoramic views of Athens is St.George Lycabettus in Kolonaki at Kleomenous street 2

And a more economical option, located on the pavement of Apostolou Pavlou next to the Acropolis,
phidias hotel
