Andros, greece

Country forums / Western Europe / Greece

I am planning on going to Andros n mid june for 2/3 nights i will be travelling solo
I a have decided on Andros as it is a short ferry trip from Athens and then i will be going back to Athens for a few days again

The queton i have is. Is andros a good place to visit for a young solo traveller or is it full of old people and couples.
Im looking for the following

authentic greek food and drink
good night life
enjoyable for solo travellers
great beach

I understand its not going to be a s lively and trendy as my konos crete and corfu but those are quite far away from Athens by ferry and with my short time scale i thought Andros might fit the bill

A short ferry ride is NOT a good reason to pick an island that won't give you what you want. Andros doesn't have much in the way of night life, and I expect it wouldn't be that much fun for solo travellers, especially in June. PAROS is great for singles ... it's 4 hours by slow ferry, 3 hours by faster ferry, 45 minutes by plane.

Why not make more efficient use of your time by avoiding going in to Central Athens TWICE?? Instead, on arrival, go directly to your island (by plane or fast-ferry, depending on schedule) ... then do all your Athens stuff at the end.

IT will save you precious HOURS, even a full day. There may be a reason that you cannot do this, but you do not say. When you want specific good advice, you need to provide specific important factors.

Yes my plan was to go straight to the island from the airport by ferry and visit athens on the way back

The issues i have issue my flight lands in Athens at 2.25pm
There are 2 ferrys that day which go to Paros

17:30 Piraeus to paros which arrives there at 21:45
15:45 Rafina to paros which arrives at 19:00

Ideally i would like to be on the island by the evening hence why i choose andros whiich would arrrive by 7.30 and the ferry price is cheaper also

I understand Paros would be more suitable then andros

If my flight lands at 2.25 would i still be able to make the 3.45 ferry from Rafina??

Sorry to hijack this thread slightly but, TRAVELERJAN!!! There is a post, now on second page at top, from someone wanting to visit Greece with a baby and it seems to me you are particularly good at replying to that sort of query.....

There will be plenty of nightlife on Andros by mid-June. If you want to go to Andros look into departing from Rafina. There are "Fast Ferries" (company name) that take 2 hours to reach Andros from that port, departing at 5:30. There is an airport bus that will take you to Rafina that leaves from in front of the Airport Sofitel Hotel.

You will NEVER make that 3:45 ferry to Paros.

Thanks

The issue is still the amount off days i have and the erry timetables for paros and my konos doesnt quite fit in
Any other islands one would recomond for solos

5

Any suggestions on mykonos as there are good ferry times for that. is it suitable for solo travellers..

6

Mykonos is MADE for solo travelers, just be sure you bring enough money, LOL.

7

The 3:45 ferry leaves from Raina which is about 20minutes cab drive from the airport are you sure this stil is not enough time to make it..

Also i have heard the greek ferry timetable is unpredictable and is subject to change is this true?

Andros is basically a weekend/holiday home island for the Athens urban area. It only meets your last requirement of good beaches.

The rest you may just as well forget about. I have stayed on the island.

Much better alternatives are in the Cyclades like Mykonos you can use the ferries from Rafina, OK it's further than Andros but the latter is pointless, I can assure you of that.

A flight arrival of 14:25 realistically means a ferry around 17:30 to Mykonos, the cheaper Theologos P.
It is unlikely you will make the 15:45 Superjet it is also pricier and uncomfortable in rough sea.

Ferries are reliable.

Hello,
I'd like to know what kind of nightlife you're interested in order to give you a bit more info.
There are islands very near the city, like Spetses and Hydra, which do have nightlife, bars, and good food (not the BEST beaches, but very nice they are).
Mykonos is the only island in Greece with cosmopolitan sort of nightlife (big clubs with international djs).
The others have pretty good nightlife, but not as 'wild'.
Paros is a very good option, as mentioned by some of the others in this thread.

Andros is a quiet place. it's a nice place -- just not the type of place a person goes to party.
I haven't been to Naxos, but it's also big with good connections.

Generally, in Greece, the rule is: if you want the best beaches, you need to go to the least explored islands (with no nightlife).
