Algarve in late June

Country forums / Western Europe / Portugal

I've got 5 days to travel in Europe at the end of June, and I'm thinking of the Algarve. Does anyone know whether the beaches and towns are packed at that time of year? I was in Tavira about 10 years ago and loved it. It didn't feel too touristy then, but it might have changed... thanks for any advice you can offer!

If your 5 days are actually in June then you will probably miss all or most of the European school holidays so the beaches/towns will not be completely overrun with youngsters.

On the other hand since that time is just before peak demand, and therefore peak price, bites you are still likely to hit many other people taking advantage of the (slightly) lower prices.

I'm afraid going to the Algarve in any of the summer months (June to September) means plenty of tourists. Its what the place's whole economy is built upon after all.

I have been to Tavira several times over the years and I think it is still OK. Not too many tourist, especially if you avoid August. June should be fine. I think the ferry to the beach is not going from Tavira at that time of the year, but only from Quadros Aguas (20 min walk or a short bus ride from downtown Tavira).

The main side of Tavira became more tuoristic in the last years, but the other side of the river / channels is still quite unspoiled. I will got back first week in September....

Algarve will be packed !

In late June Algarve won't be packed, at all! It's a very good time to come in holidays here (weather it's the main interrogation, July it's a more safe month - usually - but late June can be also great). Of course there will be many tourists around, but also it depends from the areas; in Albufeira (and around) mainly, but also Portimão and some other areas there will be much more than around west and east ends. Sagres and Tavira, for an example, they will be very good destinations. Tavira is more 'safe' concerning weather and urban / social atmosphere. It's still a very quite town and touristic destination (comparing to others), even in high summer. On the whole, in late June you wil have, still, a very relaxed atmosphere (for a summer time / season in a touristic and coastal destination). Carlos
