A week in Portugal Where to goCountry forums / Western Europe / Portugal
Hi to all, As This is my first visit to Portugal I need some advices
Do you want to visit Lisbon or Gibraltar? | 1
"do you thing I could Waste 2 days of driving to go and visit Gibraltar?" I can think of no logical reason whatsoever to drive all the way to Gibraltar and back taking up 2 days out of 6 when there's loads you could see in and around Lisbon. If you must go further than the Greater Lisbon area - including the likes of Sintra, Cascais etc - then Coimbra and Porto are much more accessible - and personally I'd get the train to such places. | 2
Check out the attached websites. Rough Guide provides a lot of info in their site. Also the Portugal tourist site has a lot of info, but it can be a bugger to navigate. You could also click the destination tab at the top of this website to get info on sites, activities and day trips from Lisbon. Travel to Gibraltar on another trip [http://www.roughguides.com/travel/europe/portugal/lisbon.aspx] | 3
Apart from the really nice sightseeing cities and places already mentioned, why don't you consider staying "those" 2 days in such an amazing and laid back place as Sagres? regards | 4
Thank you all for your help to be honest the 2 are the reasons that make me want togo to Gibraltar | 5
You can do a lot of great stuff in Lisbon for 6 days. Check out the Castle, the Alfama (Moorish area), Santa Justa elevator, Belem area, .... Go to Sintra for 2 days if you want to see more than just Lisbon. Gibraltar is over 650 kms away. That is like being in the Milan area for only 6 days and taking/wasting time with a trip to Luxemborg for 2 days (nothing against Lux... just not worth the time, distance, effort when there is so much more where you are). Pointless. (though I agree... the monkeys are pretty cool). | 6
Like everyone else, I'd say stay in the Lisbon area. I've been to Lisbon several times, most recently last January for 5 days. And I felt that was just barely enough time to see the 'must sees'. Lisbon is an incredibly walkable city. It is a joy just to wander around, watching life unfold in its many squares and pedestrian malls. The Portuguese are very welcoming and yet it is clear that they are totally unwilling to become something else just to accommodate tourists. So you get to engage a way of life that is alive, flows at its own pace, has a sense of 'place' about it. Buy any good guidebook and you'll be invited to explore all sorts of ruins, galleries, museums, neighbourhoods and cathedrals. I also love Sintra for a day trip. I gather you can also get to Evora and back in a day, although I haven't done that myself. But for history buffs I'm told it is wonderful. One thing that I've learned from my many years of travel is that when I go to a place, I go to a place. I no longer allow myself to get seduced into side-trips that seem so effortless in the brochure and turn out to be major distractions (if not nightmares) in reality. So save Gibraltar Lucky you! :) | 7
