3 weeks in Dordogne with 85 yr old mum

I am planning to take my mum to Dordogne April 2017 for 3 weeks. We will commence journey from Paris. I would like to base ourselves somewhere nice and do day trips from there. We will be relying on public transport or local guides. We are looking for a relaxing trip that my mum can manage. She is pretty mobile. If anyone has any suggestions about where to stay and what to do that would be great. We like gardens, art, history and food.

THIS April? As in NOW??? There aren't even 3 weeks left in April!

There is virtually no public transportation in the Dordogne, as you'd know if you'd read a guidebook or two. Tours are few and far between and tend to originate in places like Périgueux or Brive, which are not particularly appealing except in the very old town centers. If you want to do much of anything that the Dordogne is justly famous for, you will need a car. There is nowhere I can think of with the possible exception of Sarlat where it's possible to do interesting daytrips without a car, and even those are very limited. It's also very, very late to be looking for accommodations. In the past couple of weeks, the tourists have been sprouting up like weeds all over, and it's already getting crowded.

What does "pretty mobile" mean? It's a rocky, craggy area, and a lot (maybe most) of the sites people come to see involved hoofing it over rough and hilly terrain. Even in the villages and towns, sidewalks are uneven.

Given what little you've told us, this sounds like a very bad idea. Even if it's next April, it's a bad idea.
