im planning to visit switzerland sometime between september and october. it will be my first time so im having some apprehensions which is pretty normal. im doing my extensive research about how to get in and out in terms of transportation. zurich will be my port of entry, from the airport how easy to go to the city? what's the most convenient means of transportation? any nice and cheap place where you can stay overnight? do you have any price list?

after zurich im going to basel, i know the easiest way is to take the train, how much it will cost? last thing, what's the most convenient transport from basel going to nice? either by air or by land?

many thanks!

The best way to get to Zurich from the airport is on the train...I forget how much I payed, but it wasn't a lot, and very convinient. The best way to get around the city is to walk and take the tram. The tram always confuses me, but once I get going again, it's simple. It is always on time so you must be too! The city is quite compact, so you can get around really well on foot.

how about going from basel to nice? what's ur suggestion or recommendation? what's the most convenient way to get to nice? via land (train) or via air (perhaps easyjet)?

BSL-NCE: easyjet is the cheapest, if you book well in advance.
The train from Basel to Domodossola costs a lot: 55 Euro standard fare.
Domodossola - Borgomanero - Torino - Ventimiglia - Nice is cheaper.

how easy is easyjet? how realiable? any airline who has their flight operation going to NCE from BSL?

I had never problems with easyjet. I usually fly from Basel, Geneva or Milano Malpensa.

When you arrive in Zürich airport. I would buy a round trip ticket to Zürich.
Because this is valid for 24 hours in the whole Airport area and the City of Zürich
all buses, trams and Trains.
The Train need about 10 mins from Zürich Airport to Zürich Mainstation (Zürich HB).
Since Dec 2008 there is also a Tram (Nr 10) to Zürich. It starts from the bus station.
The tram need about 30 mins to Zürich Mainstation.

From Zürich to Basel direct train almost every 30 mins and it needs about 1 hour to get there.
There is no reservation needed.

From Basel to Nice you can also take a train.

Basel dep. 20:43
Mulhouse arr. 21:18
Mulhouse dep 22:10
Nice arr: 09:00

From Mulhpouse to nice will be a night train with couchette coaches.

Details for the trains:

The cheapest sleeper (couchette, not bed) Mulhouse - Nice costs 67 euro + 6 euro for Basel - Mulhouse. Have a look at http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/
