Hi neckervd,

Not sure if you can be aware if I post this.

Update:
- Have bought air tickets
- Have booked most of the accomodations

Updated itinerary:

  • Day 1 - Day 3:
Coming from Milan, take train from Tirano to St. Moritz.
    Staying in Silvaplana (3 nights)
    • Hiking Murtel - Pontresina, with backup 1 day
    • If weather is not good for hiking, town strolling to Chur/Pontresina/St. Moritz
    • Any other bad weather optional activity here?
  • Day 4 - Day 7:
    Staying in Lucerne (4 nights)
    • 1 day Lucerne strolling
    • 1 day to Rigi (any 1 of the 4 days good weather)
    • Day trip to Montreux
    • Day trip to Geneva or Bern
    • I know day trips to Montreux and Geneva might be too far from Lucerne (2 to 3 hours) But well, that's the price I have to pay in order not to change base too often.
    • Side note: In order to save times, I probably would go early in the morning, taking 06.00 or 07.00am train
  • Day 8 - Day 14:
    Staying in Wengen (7 nights)
    • Nessental (Would love to see the Trift Bridge)
    • Aletsch Hike (go to Bettmeralp, abit of a stretch I know but again, I am trying to avoid changing base too often)
    • Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch
    • Schynige Platte - Faulhorn - Bachalpsee - First
    • I have 3 days reserved if weather not permitting for hikes.

Now I do need help for the days in Wengen, I am not sure there are a lot of "bad weather" options there. Probably, what I can make is visit to Brienz, and Trummelbach Falls. What else I can do there?

Please let me know if the above itinerary needs to have a major overhaul (I hope not, though)

Thanks

Regards,
R

Silvaplana, bad weather program:
Thermal spa of St. Moritz
Visit the 18 (!) small museums in the Upper Engadin area
http://www.stmoritz.ch/en/winter/lifestyle/art-culture/museums.html?tx_wfqbe_pi1[showpage][88]=2
Italian town of Chiavenna: 1 1/2 hrs by bus from Silvaplana
Spa and castle of Scuol-Tarasp (check opening hours!)

(More or less) short day trips from Lucerne:
Einsiedeln Monastery
http://www.einsiedeln.ch/Kloster-Wallfahrt.1107.0.html
Breinzer Rothorn roundtrip: Lucerne - Soerenberg - Brienzer Rothorn - Brienz - Bruenig - Lucerne
http://www.brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch/en.html
Towns of Zurich, Basel, Bern, Solothurn (medieval centers, stunning museums, etc.): all less than 1 hr away by train

Wengen, bad weather: Beatus caves, castles of Oberhofen, Thun, Spiez; museums of Thun, Bern, etc.
if the weather is better in Valais or Italy: train Wengen dp 6.42 - Brig ar 8.40 - Stresa ar 9.38

Man, I'm lovin' this. I'm usually for not planning too tight.

Talk with "foreigners" a lot. Long conversations. Hear 'em out. Learn the third p.o.v.

Thanx, Oz. Its how we get through toufgh times too. Find the joke and the lesson in it.

r_balest, you seem to be planning a super-ultra-careful itinerary... be sure to follow-up this thread with what you actually ended up doing because I have a strong feeling the actual result will be much different from your super-ultra-careful plans. My advice is to stop planning and just go... figure out the little daily details once you get there, i really think it's more fun that way than referring to an hourly checklist of when and where you need to be.

neckervd is answering all your requests with great detail but it seems like a bit much to me. You two have connected for sure and that's great but i think the traveling is best experienced when you have a plan yet it's flexible enough to just go with the flow.

Much of your itinerary is weather dependent too, and so much a can and will happen. You're planning all these hikes but you might also meet a bunch of new friends and party until 5am. That early morning hike might be canceled even if the weather is perfect.

The only thing you're not planning for is the unexpected... Just go and have fun! You'll figure it out...!

@neckervd: Thanks for the links! the monastery looks very interesting and I am definitely bookmarking the Brienz Rothorn page!
After a bit of checking, seems that the Brienz is not covered by Swiss Pass, we still have to pay around USD 40 per person.

Beatus caves, castles of Oberhofen, Thun, Spiez => these are in places of my Wengen "B" plan list :)

@gawkabout and @TheTravelApprentice:
Yeah, I know. I am sorry to have seemed to be a rigid person with a stiff itinerary.
I was just really looking into knowledge so we won't be stranded without options if bad weather comes about. And trust me, I wont be looking to refer to hourly checklist as well

Speaking about unexpected, it also happened when I traveled to New Zealand where I was chased (I did not realize he was chasing me though) and fined by police for speeding. and those experiences really could not be planned! :)

Thanks for the advices guys.

And one more thing, if possible I'd love to hear about off the beaten-path hiking (but not dangerous in anyway). I've read several Switzerland guide books but don't think I have ever heard of the Brienz hiking path like neckervd posted above, for example and it really excites me.

R

Brienzer Rothorn roundtrip:
Lucerne - Schuepfheim - Soerenberg, Lucerne - Giswil - Soerenberg, Brienz - Bruenig - Lucerne, Brienz - Interlaken (train and boat): fully coverde with Swiss Pass
Soerenberg - Brienzer Rothorn - Brienz: half fare (32 CHF/36 USD)

Hiking: there are ten thousands of kms of well signmarked hiking trails all over Switzerland. You will never find all them in a guide book.

Wow! Boring rainy day. We're digging up 6 month old threads again.

Carry on, in that fashion.
