Hello everyone!
My cousins and I will be traveling to Switzerland to visit my VERY distant cousin who currently lives there....
We will be there from April 2- April 11th and wanted to venture to about 2 other countries. I know I definitely wanted to go to Rome....as I have a friend there.....do you guys think that would work and if so what would be the best mode of transportation....

Also whats the weather like around this time and if so what shall I do while im there......

10 days would allow you to see a couple of places in Switzerland, not much more. If you want to, you could combine it with a couple of days in Rome, but that's about it.

As for what to see and do, get yourself a guidebook. You don't even mention where you'll be based in Switzerland and what your interests are. You'll have to make up your own mind about what you want to see, there's no point in us telling you what you must see.

Have a look at http://www.myswitzerland.com/en.cfm/home
http://www.easyjet.com/ has flights from both Basel and Geneva to Rome for about 100 US$ around April 10th (Easter week, it would be cheaper at other dates).
There are trains too (7 -10 hours trip, standard fare more expensive than the flight)
Timetables and fares: www.trenitalia.it

You asked a 'how long is a piece of string' question jcastro. The more intelligent the question the more relevant the responses can be. 'What shall I do while im there', is a pretty useless question unless you say what you are interested in. 'Regular sightseeing' hardly describes what your interests are. We are not all clones with the same interests.

Why are you going to Switzerland other than to visit a distant cousin? There must be some reason why you want to go there. The same question applies to Rome. To write, 'I know I definitely wanted to go to Rome....as I have a friend there', implies that is your only reason for going.

I never understand people who say they are going somewhere but seem to have no idea why they are going.

WOW! a real grown up response there.....

Im sorry that all you do is spend your time on this site and respond to strangers with useless information.....nice that you spend your time in this manner....all I wanted was a couple of easy things to do while i was there and clearly you're not the person to answer them for me....im not asking for an itenerary......so please go about your day and have a fantastic winter!

Unbelievable how rude some of these newbies are. Have fun in Switzerland OP.

P.S. How were we supposed to know that you can ski?

The average guidebook for Switzerland has some 200-300 pages dedicated to places worth seeing as a tourist. So yes, it is hard to make suggestions without knowing what you're looking for.
