Two of us will be backpacking in Switzerland for a couple of weeks in early-mid June. We´d really appreciate suggestions about cheap travel and accommodation. We would consider camping, but wonder if campsites are too hard to access without a car?

i dont know much about switzerland, but it is very expensive!
They have special tax system and locals earn more money. Living costs are very high.
Perhaps you could think about backpacking in Austria?
It is much cheaper, as far as I know.
I know that many hotels give great discounts, because it is not season, if you do not travel in the normal holiday time.

I absolutely do not agree with newnoise at all. You do not need to bypass Switzerland just because it might be little more expensive than Austria. There are so many reasons why you should travel in Switzerland:
Nature, Water, Public transportation, four cultures, traditions, sports, events, health, cities, hospitality and QUALITY!
Campsites are not to hard to access at all as public transportation is so well in Switzerland.

Disregard newnoise, he has no clue what he is talking about. Of course there is cheap accommodation in Switzerland, too. There are hundreds of campgrounds that can be reached by public transport (train and/or bus), online searching will show you long lists. Or then, there are Swiss Youth Hostels , they are present even in such famous tourist resorts like Zermatt, Grindelwald or St. Moritz. Again, Zermatt, Grindelwald and St. Moritz have campgrounds, too.
