Being the person who changes their mind as frequently as if not more than their underwear, I've become dead-set on studying at the University of Geneva for six months on an exchange program with my university. Although I haven't yet applied, I'd figure I'd do some research beforehand on accommodation and the like.

I understand that I will most likely be staying in student digs (assuming I go), but I am wondering if homestays were a prevalent option in Geneva. If so, how does one go about organising a homestay with a local family? Also, I know that Switzerland is a ridiculously expensive country. Being on a measly student budget, I am also wondering if there were ways to cut corners on food and travel costs.

(Just to provide some background information, I'm a Bachelor of Arts - French/Politics and International Studies - student from Melbourne, Australia.)

Any help is more than welcome :)

Yes, there are lots of ways to cut costs (beginning with the Swiss card, which lasts a year and gives half-price travel). The fact remains, however, that Geneva is expensive even by Swiss standards and so you should be sure that your university can help with affordable accommodation.

For food you could pop over to France to do your shopping. It's much cheaper. Especially for meat.
Or in Geneva shop at the discount Supermarkets: Denner, Pickpay or Aldi, but there is not much choice especially for fresh produce.
