Hello all,

Am in the midst of making my itinerary for our holiday in Switzerland (will come back for inputs once its done).

Rather than staying in Interlaken, we were considering staying in a smaller less touristy place closeby and have narrowed it to Grindenwald or Lautebrunnen and making day trips from here (5 days / 4 nights).

I would be grateful for thoughts on which would be a better choice and why.

Thanks
GC

Grindenwald and Lautebrunnen may be smaller than Interlaken, but I'd hardly call them less touristy. :)

Of the two, Grindenwald is bigger and has more tourists. Both are amazingly beautiful. The Lautebrunnen valley is amazing, lined with 300 meter cliffs. Grindenwald has Eiger towering over it.

For hiking, I do prefer the Lautebrunnen valley.

Lauterbrunnen is the quieter choice of the two, but not that much less touristic. For train connections to other cities Interlaken is still a better choice if you want to day trip to other cities- you can try to look at some of the smaller towns around the lake.

In automn, Lauterbrunnen has not much sun.
What do you mean with day trips?
Lauterbrunnen is fine for destinations like Murren, Kleine Scheidegg - Jungfrau area, hike to Griesalp or Kiental, Schilthorn.
Grindelwald is fine for First, Faulhorn - Schynige Platte, Grosse Scheideegg - Rosenlaui, Kleine Scheidegg - Jungfrau area.
For day trips to other parts of the Bernese Oberland or even to other places in Switzerland, Interlaken or Spiez are better choices.

Thanks very much for all your inputs. I am leaning towards adding one extra day and splitting it between Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen.

my choice would be Wengen over Lauterbrunnen...
but it's pricier... and it depends where you're looking to go hiking.
