Lots of good advice here. Aribo has made some very helpful and well-informed comments, so post #5 is just bizarre.
Personally, I really enjoy long days looking at good views through a train window, and for me that is one of the great pleasures that Switzerland offers. So if you decide to take the long and expensive train journey from Paris to Venice, consider routing yourselves through Switzerland. Towards the end of your last day in Paris you could get a train to Geneva: this journey can be very affordable if you book one of the 'prems' on the voyages-sncf web site. Sleep in Geneva (expensive) and set off early the next morning, preferably taking the 'Golden Pass' (a special train with observation cars). You travel the length of Lac Leman, then ascend steeply into the mountains, and will experience a glut of great views. Consider spending a night in eastern Switzerland and then entering Italy via one of the most spectacular mountain train rides on the entire planet. But only consider this if you really, really like good views from trains.
