Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. I read some of the information given in this form and the information given is really very helpful
Guys I need your help in planning my trip.

In May end I am planning for 6 days trip to Switzerland..
I have done some research and I want to cover the following things
Zermatt, Montreux, jungfrou, Glacier Express, Bernina Express, Mount Titles/Pilatus, Luzern (If possible)

Does it possible to do all this in 6 days..

Please advice if there are any better options which I have missed out so that I can replace the above mentioned places with that…

I was also thinking I am doing Mount Titles, Jungfrou, Zermatt.. They all are mount ranges so am I including so much of Mount areas. Please advice

I will be entering in Switzerland from Venice

Please help me in deciding my itinerary I am very confused how I put the different places day wise.

I don’t want to move in Switzerland carrying my luggage. I have read in Switzerland people make there base at one place like interlaken, Zurich etc which ever is favorable
and do the day trips.

I am very confused where I can make my hotel base because I don’t want to do much check out and check in..

I am really looking forward for advices so that I can make great and economical trip.

Thanks alot

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I read some of the information given in this form

You obviously haven't read enough. Your question is coming up on this forum at least twice a week. Please use the Search window in the upper right hand corner in order to get heaps of instant answers. Later come back with specific questions; we'll then only be too happy to assist.

Switzerland is a small country it's true, but your itinerary is nuts. You won't see anything other than (admittedly generally pretty good) Swiss trains especially if you base yourself in one spot and travel back and forward each day.

You've got 6 days. Go stay somewhere in the Gimmelwald, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen area for 6 days. Do some hiking. Look around mountains. Relax and enjoy the countryside without having to spend hours on a train every day.

Economical and Switzerland are generally not really terms that are used together all that often. It pays to be aware of that.

Of course, it's possible! But it will cost you a fortune. Count about 200 USD/pax for the Jungfrau railway (25 per cent reduction with Swiss Pass) and a little less for Titlis and Kleinmatterhorn/Gornergrat (Zermatt).

My suggestion:
Day 0: Venice dp 17.20 by direct train (no change) up to Lugano ar 21.13. Sleep at Hotel Montarina, in a quiet park close to the railway station.

Day 1: visit Lugano, the S. Angioli church with marvellous frescous, may be the fresco of the Last Supper at Ponte Capriasca too, go by boat to scenic villages like Gandria or Morcote, visit Swissminiatur and at least one of the following mountains with panoramic views over the lakes and to the Alps (cog railway or cablecar): Monte Bre, Monte San Salvatore, Monte Generoso.

Day 2: Leave Lugano at 10.00 by bus along Lake Lugano and Lake Como to Tirano, have lunch in this small Italian mountain town, board then the Bernina Express, enjoy the view to the glaciers and Piz Bernina (4050m) and arrive at the shore of Lake St. Moritz at 16.39.

Day 3: Glacier Express St. Moritz dp 9.15 - Zermatt ar 16.52

Day 4: Enjoy Zermatt, it's numerous big glaciers and high mountains, go by Gornergrat railway up to Rotenboden, pic nic at Lake Riffel, in front of the highest mountains of Switzerland, etc, etc.
Leave Zermatt in the evening for Montreux (2 1/2 hrs journey, trains every hour).

Day 5: Visit the small medieval town of Gruyeres with castle, cheese diary and Cailler chocolate factory nearby. Organized excursion from Montreux Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, can also be done individually every day.

Day 6: visit Chillon castle in the morning

It's absolutely impossible to do all the things you plan in day trips. Therefore I suggest to stay 2 nights at Lugano, 1 night each at St. Moritz and Zermatt and 2 nights at Montreux. Luggage transport shouldn't be a problem, as there are direct trains from Venice to Lugano and from St. Moritz to Zermatt, and only 1 change (with very short distances) between Lugano and St. Moritz resp Zermatt and Montreux.

Skip Titlis and Jungfraujoch. You will se so many high mountains and glaciers around Zermatt, that Titlis and Jungfraujoch would only be more of the same and hence a waste of time and money.

Hi Neckervd,

Thanks alot.. for helping me.. and i am sorry for replying late..

I have lot of questions some are

1: Do you really think the mountains ranges in Gornergrat is more beautiful then the mountain ranges of Jungfraujoch
2: If i dont want to go for the Gruyeres then what can i add.
3: As i am doing two trains Glacier express and Bernina Express. I am finding them costly. Do you really think its worth taking. Also
as i will be taking the 2nd class tickets so the views can be seen easily. Also does one can take the photographs
without getting the reflections from window.
4:You have suggested me to go for Lugano but i have seen tourists are covering the interlaken area the most.Do you really think
that i should leave the interlaken area and i cover Lugano one.

My questions might be stupid but its always better to clarify and ask.
Thanks alot for helping me.

One more thing I can enter the switzerland either from Venice and leave by Milan or from Milan and leave by Venice. Kindly suggest which will be best rouute to follow.

1: Gornergrat is in the middle of the Alps. Jungfraujoch is at the Northern end of the Alps. Both places are fine, it's just a matter of personal preferencies. You told us initially that you want to do the Glacier Express ride; this yourney ends in the Zermatt Gornergrat area. Google for some webcam or other pictures and decide!

2: You can go wherever you like. Have a look at http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/home.html and the many links you will find there.

3: You told us initially that you want to do the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express rides. If you come from Italy, Bernina Express is the logical acces route to Glacier Express. According to your itinerary, the cheapest ticket will probably be a Swss Pass for 4 or 8 days (226 or 326 CHF/pax). Bernina Express and glacier Express are both included in the Swiss Pass.
Both trains are fully airconditioned and you cannot open the windows. It's possible to do the same itinerary with older and slower trains (where you can open the windows) however, but this involves some train changes:
Bernina: same timetables, no change between Tirano and St. Moritz.
Glacier-Express-itinerary: change at Reichenau or Chur, Disentis, Andermatt, Brig (these places could be used for stop overs, as slow trains run almost every hour. Disentis: monastery; Andermatt: nice mountain village; Brig: small medieval town with fine castle; Chur: very old town, capital of canton Grischun, fine museum).

  1. If you enter Switzerland from Italy, you pass through Lugano anyway.

  2. You may also stay at Brig instead of Zermatt and do a few day trips from there: Zermatt, Saas Fee, Aletsch Glacier, Bern, Interlaken - Jungrau area (if you decide to go there too), etc. Brig is only 1 hour by (direct) train from Gllarate, from where you can reach Milano Malpensa airport (MXP) by Gallarate citybus (no need to go up to Milan).
