Hello!

Does anyone know if there are any restaurants in Bern, Zurich or Geneve that serve fondue in individual portions? I'll be backpacking alone, so not sure if I'll be able to eat fondue with a buddy, and most places require a min of 2. But I want my fondue =[

Thank you!

As a back up plan, if your hostel has a kitchen then you could do a make-shift one there. You can buy the cheese pre-grated at the supermarket, grab some bread and cook the fondue cheese on the stove with some white wine and kirsch. Hopefully some other people in the hostel would be excited enough to join in some cheap fondue with you too. :)

I never tried them myself but at the supermarkets you can buy 1 person fondue's that you heat in the microwave.

If you want a proper fondue though, close to Zurich is a place that serves fondue in a proper caquelon (fondue pot) by person and they are really good. The place is a bit out of town but reachable by bus. Check out: http://www.chaesalp.ch/

I could imagine that also the Dezaley in Zurich downtown offers fondue for 1 person but you'd need to ask: http://le-dezaley.ch/

Assuming you are staying in a hostel, ask around to see if anyone wants to join you.

Thank you everyone! I'll definitely ask ppl from the hostel if they want to join me - more fun to eat with ppl :)

I had this same problem during a visit to Geneve last week, and solved it at the Cafe du Soleil, Place du Petit-Saconnex, where I had a great fondue on my own.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, whether or not you are travelling alone. It is in the suburbs, so although it does get a lot of visitors many of its customers are locals. It definitely feels like a local neighborhood restaurant, and is friendly and welcoming. Prices are reasonable by Geneve's high standards.

There are a number of other Swiss dishes, as well as reasonably priced wine with several by the glass or carafe. Its fondue is rated as one of the best by several reviews I read. I think its probably a much better option for local food than the more tourist orientated places in the centre of town.

There is a definite technique to eating the fondue, which I didn't quite get at first. However, one of the locals sat at a neighboring table saw this and came over to show me how to eat it properly !

If you are staying in the centre of town take the number 3 tram from near the railway station, this has a stop directly outside the restaurant.
