We have only a short time, one day and a night, and was wondering which of the two Basel or Bern,to visit as we only have time for one. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of place do you like?
Bern is IMHO a more beautiful place,with more traditional buildings and (for most tourists) more to do.Baselhas a couple of excellent art galleries,especially if you like contemporary art.
Where are you coming from,and going to after?

i life in bern and think that "my" city is the most beautiful one in switzerland, so i'm not really neutral:-). basel is also a great place, as lucapal pointed out with good art galleries. its like asking what is better, apples or pears ? it depends on what you like, what you want to do etc.
bern is the more scenic and "beautiful" city. i dont know when you will have your 1 day in either bern or basel. if its in spring or summer, you can sit outside on the bundesplatz in one of the cafés / restaurants and people watch, in summer swim in the aare river, if not in winter (during winter the bears will be hibernating) - go to the bear park and observe the bears. if you are into art, the paul klee centre is a great place to visit http://www.zpk.org/ etc. etc.
i would spend your own day in bern.
and i'm sure that people who life in basel have arguments going for basel instead of bern :-). its your choice really.
