I have been looking at both hostels very closely but can't determine which one i would rather stay at. Both are in the same price range, Balmer's includes breakfast and Funny Farm does not but Funny Farm seems so have a lot more social activities such as outdoor pool and bonfire nightly. I am heading there in late July and would also like an idea of when i should book my stay.

Simple answer: Now! Balmer's and Funny Farm are going to be packed in July and therefore early bookings are advised.
Okay thanks! ill have to make my decision this week then and book. Have either of you stayed at any of the three hostels?
my experience at both is 5 years ago... so take that into account.
Balmers seemed more "packaged"...
with a better set-up for daily outings and activities...
and was ever_so_slightly more controlled...
Funny Farm is the place to go if you're more into smoking dope and drinking around the pool
and less than inspired to get out and do stuff everyday.
certainly a "looser" party atmosphere than Balmers...
both reminded me of "Spring Break" at college...
be that good or bad... or both.
Consider staying in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, or Gimmelwald for a different experience in the mountains.
