Hello,
I’ve never been to Switzerland and am currently trying to organise a 5 day trip there with my parents who are visiting from Australia in early September. (I live in London. They love mountains and cows!).

The general plan is to fly in and out of Milan and explore the Graubunden + Ticino regions.
So far my itinerary is:

Day 1
(Milan – Tirano by train). Bernina line Tirano – St Moritz. Hire a car in St Moritz and drive to Zuoz.

Day 2
Zuoz – St Maria/Mustair. Then on to Scuol, crossing the Austria border en-route.

Day 3
Drive from Scuol to Klosters via Guarda. Then on to Chur.

Here’s where I get a bit lost… I don’t know whether it’s best to travel from Chur to Via Mala OR onward from Chur to Andermatt via Disentis/Muster… (potentially detouring to Vals)

Day 4
Drive St Gotthard Pass (Andermatt to Bellinzona)

Day 5
Bellinzona to Lugano. Drive to either Morcote or the Valle Maggia.
(Lugano – Milan by train)

I’d really appreciate any advice you can give regarding this itinerary and which routes are best to take.
Any tips on ‘must-sees’ in this region would also be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

At which airport of Milan will you arrive?
There are direct buses from Malpensa airport to both, Chiasso/Como and Lugano. You may also get to Como by train without making the detour via Milan.
From Orio al Serio airport, you could take a bus to Bermamo railway station and then a train to Lecco and a connceting tain from there to Tirano.

Why do you want to rent a car at St. Moritz?
Trains from St. Moritz to Zuoz and Zernez run every 30 to 60 minutes and the buses from there to Mustair - Malles - Resia - Nauders - Scuol more or less every hour.
Train connections from Scuol to Guarda railway station - Klosters - Landquart - Chur resp Davos - Thusis or Samedan Thusis and buses from Thusis to Bellinzona at least every hour too.
Trains Lugano - Bellinzona and Bellinzona - Locarno at least every 30 minutes. Buses Lugano - Morcote and Locarno - Vallemaggia every hour.
A car would be more useful between any of the Milan airports and Switzerland or for a ride to Passo Stelvio than within Switzerland: trains Milan - Tirano only every 120 minutes; almost no buses Tirano - Stelviopass - Spondinig - Malles or Mustair Umbrailpass - Stelviopass.
